A number of players have played for both clubs. Now my question is which set of fans claim them as their own.

In these quite times, international break and no transfer window and in the spirt of good will between north east football fans (well I can hope) I am going to post a different player each day and ask fans of both clubs to give their memories of the playert ans say if he is one of their own or is he lost to the other side.

To start with what are you thoughts on Bryan (Pop) Robson. Played for Newcastle at thje start of his careeer and I think he was in the side which won the Fair Cup for Newcastle but then signed three times for Sunderland.

    OK lads over to you

This is quite a good idea for a thread actually but Pop Robson was a bit before my time unfortunately.

I'm more the Lee Clark generation (who i think we can safely lay claim to after the T-shirt incident!!)

It might be a better idea to just crash about 5 players down at once and ask people for a reason why for each. try to mix the generations up to keep everyone involved.

a few suggestions for future ones would be Chopra, Bramble, Simpson.

He played more games for us and started his career here as well as winning a trophy so I would suggest this would make him more of a Toon legend than a 5under1and one, despite him actually being a mackem and growing up watching them.

I hereby claim Bobby Moncur for the Toon whilst Bramble is a true Mackem legend!

Not the biggest player but he would give 100% for Newcastle. He scored some important goals for us in the Fairs cup.

One player you could call a Toon and Sunderland legend, for the goals he scored for us and then playing for the club you supported as a kid.

You lot can keep Allardyce. I know he never played for us, but we'd all rather forget about him.

I would say chops was more mackem in terms of first team impact. he did great for us at every youth level and in reserve but he never really made it in the first team. whereas he enjoyed a bit of success at your place didn't he?

    <laugh>

    i'd say for us

    Lee Clark
    Robbie Elliott
    Tommy Gibb
    Shay Given
    Mick Harford
    David Kelly
    Bob Moncur
    Chris Waddle
    Ron Guthrie
    David Young
    Alan Kennedy
    Billy Whitehurst

    for you

    Paul Bracewell
    Len Shackleton
    Barry Venison
    Stan Anderson
    Lionel Perez
Jeff Clarke (pains me to say it)
    Michael Bridges

    claimed by both

    Bryan 'Pop' Robson

ones both of us would deny even played for us

    Titus Bramble
    Michael Chopra
    Steve Caldwell
and maybe Alan Foggon (bit unfair but he was ****e like)
edit: i think Perez would probably make this list as well

I think Chopra is more of a Mackem, although he scored more goals for us against them, than he scored for them against us (his only league goal for us was at the SoL.) I do remember him chucking away a glorious chance against us that would've won them the game and helped complete the double over us in our relegation season, mind.

Bobby Moncur is a Mag through and through, just as 'Pop' Robson is Sunderland through and through.

thought pop would cause some dispute although he played for you 3 times and even managed (caretaker) you i'd say he's one of us as he played over 200 times for us(saying that like he played more for west ham than either of us) tricky one can see the argument for both sides
