We are potentially walking into an even bigger disaster this summer with lots of ‘top names’ out of contract. If Evans remains and we remain in this division then the likelihood is the squad would be much weakened next season and we would face a struggle. Completely absurd how the club has been run.

Difficult to disagree the squad Hurst took over had 4 real good quality Championship players, 3 left and 1 who had previously had outstanding seasons couldn't keep the form up. We also had an extremely injury prone squad (how times change)

Hurst certainly made big mistakes in the transfer market but perhaps his lack of experience and not being a big name meant our big name players wanted to leave and all he could attract were lower league players. That transfer window still haunts us to this day. We know there have continuously been complaints about getting players in during MEs time here and that's come from experienced or big name managers, so Hurst didn't stand a chance. Like you say perhaps a Director of football would have helped, not by undermining the manager but maybe ensuring not as many big names left and we may have been able to attract Championship players.

We needed what we still need now a few experienced (not over the hill) players who've played alot of games over their career at a higher level who maybe have fallen out of favour at their current clubs but have a few more seasons to go. Going back to the Burley days he gave youngsters a chance and also recruited well from the lower leagues but he blended that with players who had high level experience who had fallen out of favour like Venus, Mowbray and Magilton. The last few seasons any player we've brought in with that experience seems to be on the verge of retirement.

Pretty interesting read and agree with what it says really. There have been some absolute crackpot owners at football clubs and Evans isn't one of those, he hasn't made on paper strange decisions and the good points are:

    1. He backs a manager with time
    2. He doesn't appear to get involved in the footballing side of things and lets a manager manage
    3. He has ensured the club has some financial stability

There are so many owners who don't have any of those traits and they are traits I would want in an owner/chairman. Unfortunately there are 2/3 big things which have cost us dear:

    1. A lack of a clear strategy from day 1. It has jumped around year on year and that may come from not having a great understanding of football. I would really like to have a strong board in the future with not all the power sitting with 1 person.
    2. Lack of leadership and a figurehead other than the manager. It's clear that he has leant on the more experienced manager for advice, I'm not sure that's right. The pressure on the players and manager because of a lack of figure head is too much and has clearly impacted on the performance.
    3. Lack of CONSISTENT funding. Others have mentioned it but you can have success without spending alot of money. But this probably backs up the first point it has been done without a strategy. He's given certain managers too much too quickly, other times when it's clear there is a need to investment he has held back. When we have sold an important player they have never been replaced, at some points we seem to have funding for transfer fees at other points just on wages meaning the balance of the squad is poor. Then there is certain players being given long term contracts without proving anything and then others their contracts just left to run down and leave for nothing. Then in other situations we turn down obscene money for our best players when it probably would've been better to cash in.

In short if he has some very good traits for an owner but unfortunately he has ruined this club through naivity mainly.

Don't think we could've got a better manager to be honest but whether it will change our downward slump I'm not sure.

Why the hell did Evans get poor Lee O'Neil to talk a load of BS yesterday. I understand keeping your cards close to your chest but just plain right lieing, come off it!!

Happy with Cook, better than previous 4 or 5. Just the takeover to be confirmed and then it's game on!

Not blown away by this. Sure, he’s got a decent track record but until we are in the top flight I always think we are better to go for hungry young managers who have yet to prove themselves. We’ve seen with both McCarthy and Lambert that the desire just isn’t there, as it’s ‘just another club’ and it could be more of the same. Having said that, I do like him over those two names any day.

Paul Cook is a sensible appointment and looks like one of the best hires that we could make in our current situation. He's got a lot of success at this level on his CV, and also got a Wigan team punching above their weight and only relegated last season by a heavy points deduction due to off-field shenanigans.

I do wonder if there's an element of Lambert/Culverhouse though, as Cook's trusted assistant, Leam Richardson, is currently caretaker manager of Wigan. Hopefully he can get him added to the backroom staff, but I'm sure it's Cook that has the tactical nous and the management qualities. Matt Gill might fill that role - knows the club and was apparently heavily involved in our recent upturn in form and the change to 4-4-2/4-4-1-1.

I’m not unhappy with the appointment - I just think our best chance this season under Evans would have been Dyer and Butcher who know the ins and outs of all the staff and what goes on and have a passion for the club. If the takeover goes through I will be more confident that Cook can deliver.

I was mortified to read that Lee O’Neill claims to have decided some of the coaching staff. Jumped up little prick.

I appreciate the romanticism and the 'they've got passion' argument around Kieron Dyer and Terry Butcher, but I'd always take a proven, experienced manager like Paul Cook, who knows what it takes to get out of this division and has a long track record of improving teams and winning silverware with more or less every club he's managed. I don't think now - of all seasons - is the time to opt for an inexperienced, rookie manager in Dyer, who hasn't managed a first team club in his career and who will still, presumably, provide that passion behind the scenes. Butcher, in my opinion, has not been a successful, relevant manager for a number of years and I'd be concerned if he had a major say on first team matters. But ultimately it all comes down to opinions, nobody knows for sure how this appointment will go or who would be the objectively best choice.

Apparently the takeover is nearing completion and is set to be cleared by the EFL, as the local and national media are reporting. My main hope - aside from Evans selling up - is that this squad can overcome the sense of complacency that has pervaded the club over the last several years. I get the impression from Cook that he is a passionate guy that demands certain standards and, unlike Hurst, he has the CV and the silverware to get some respect from the players. He's definitely a vocal touchline coach!

It's just nice to feel some enthusiasm and have a bit of positivity about the club for a change.

Just noticed that PL remaining contract is longer than PC total contract.
