Would they have to transfer to another yard if someone else there had a licence, or if someone else with a licence took over (ie is it Elliot who would lose the licence personally or the entire set up?)

A life ban is too much, he did not kill the poor horse but has made by the looks of it a very poor decision to put himself in that situation.
Is he a nice bloke does anyone know?
A years ban and his reputation taking a severe hit will be enough imo.

The licence belongs to the individual not to the yard. For someone else to take over the yard as it currently stands they would have to apply for a licence in their own name (and meet all the necessary regulatory criteria). It may be that his assistant could take over if they are eligible, but there would be a time lag in applying for the actual licence and getting it granted which would prevent any runners being sent out. It would be far faster to just transfer a horse to another yard.

When Karl Burke got banned a few years ago his wife took over the licence, though there was a delay before it was granted. Due to the nature of KB’s ban (which covered all licensed premises - any racecourse and any racing yard in the UK) he was not allowed to continue to live on the yard in the family home and had to move out for the duration of the ban.

Thanks Princess. I was just wondering about the feasibility of moving 200+ horses to other yards. I would imagine, in itself, transferring a horse to another yard would cause some delay to the horse 's next race

I don't think so, moving a horse registration from one yard to another can all be done online using the various admin portals at Weatherbys (in the UK). As long as the change of trainer goes through on the system and the horse is physically moved then the entries/runs will all come from the new yard. I'm not aware that there is a cooling off period, though of course there may be.

I didn't mean the "paper work" Princess. I meant doesn't it take some time to settle the horse in and for the new trainer to get the horse ready etc?

I'd have thought if the horse is ready to run, it's ready to run so getting the horse ready wouldn't be a problem from that point of view. As far as settling a horse in goes, racehorses are usually pretty chilled on that front as they are used to spending time away from "home" at the races. Obviously for some this could be a problem for them, but that's down to individual personality. I've not been in a massive number of racing yards, but most run on a similar routine, but again a sensitive horse would be more susceptible to this.

Thinking about it, the main issue I could see being a problem would be a change in feed, but horses move from yard to yard all the time so I'd guess there are protocols in place for this.

Interestingly there doesn’t seem to be any reaction from the bookies on Cheltenham prices. Envoi Allen steady at a shade odds-on for the Marsh but his participation and ability to perform at the top level has to be in some doubt now.

HRI also putting out a statement:

"Horse Racing Ireland unreservedly condemns the disturbing photograph that appeared on social media at the weekend.

"This image does not reflect the care, attention and respect that racehorses receive, and does a disservice to the thousands of people who look after their horses on a daily basis. Horse Racing Ireland notes and supports the IHRB investigation into the circumstances around the photograph.

"From a disciplinary perspective, the matter is in process, so any further comment on the matter or the detail of the case at this time would not be appropriate."

Envoi drifted from 1.8 odd to 2.1 on the exchange. You know bookmakers are very slow to extend a price of a horse!!

    probably agree with this Ron.
whatever happens I hope he is finished in NH racing. absolute disgrace and the photo is sickening.

a shame because he has been a superb trainer in recent years breaking up the Mullins monopoly at the highest level.
his horse (Silver Birch) also gave me my biggest ever win on a horse race.

Just had a quick look at the BHA Rules Book to get an idea of what this would fall under if under UK rules.

Failure to comply with the expectation: "A Person must not engage in conduct which the BHA considers is prejudicial to the integrity, proper conduct or good reputation of horseracing in Great Britain."

    The penalty is:
    (J)19
Prejudicial to the integrity, proper conduct or good reputation of horseracing:

Entry level penalty: £2,000 fine or suspend/withdraw/disqualify 3 months

Acceptable range of penalty: £1,000 - £15,000 fine
    1 month - 3 years suspend/withdraw/disqualify

I don't know for sure what the Irish penalty system is, but I expect it's in the same region. Of course a 3 month ban starting from April is next to pointless for a NH trainer.

As this issue has massive consequences for the sport I believe a dedicated thread is appropriate. I will try and move all comments I can find on various other threads to this one, but apologies in advance if the order appears somewhat strange.

The issue I see is that Elliott just has so many top horses - I read somewhere today he had over 100 entered for the early closing races at Cheltenham - that it just becomes a logistical impossibility. I'm sure Cheveley Park will act by the end of the week if the IHRB have not made a decision. I guess they've already been on the phone to Mullins, De Bromhead and Joseph. They will want their top horses running at the festival, especially Envoi Allen and won't want their chances scuppered by this.

I see the BHA have stepped in to say they will not allow Gordon Elliott to have runners over here while the investigation is ongoing...

What will occur I wonder for Cheltenham?
