OK, that’s half a dozen in 60 years. Probably one or two more somewhere but, considering the number of horses that run more than once in the race, it’s a poor return compared with those that win at their first try.
"I can certainly recommend one method of finding the winner, and that is to discount all horses that have run and failed to win the race in previous years. Nine times out of ten, the winner is a first time entrant. Apart from Team Spirit, Red Alligator, and Hedgehunter, I'm pushed to remember another winner that ran in the race previously." (Tam) Interestingly enough, it was always my criteria to choose a horse that had been over the National fences before, assuming they got a fair way into the race, before fading away, or jumped badly and eventually fell. Red Alligator was my first winner. However in this century those once formidible fences have been gradually trimmed back, some of the drops have been moderated, and previous course form is not as important as it once was (in my opinion) A first time runner being placed, or finishing not too far back is still as good a marker as you can pick (again, my opinion) I know it was a public relations exercise but I backed Potters Corner to win the virtual GN on my usual basis. I will probably do so again, although at now 11 years, I may have second thoughts! Other previous winners I had were Rag Trade, Grittar, Rhyme n Reason, Hedgehunter, Party Politics and Rule The World. I also backed unlucky loser Honey End, finishing like a train after being remounted in Foinavon's race and "winner but for falling" (again in my opinion) Andy Pandy, who fell with race at his mercy, then went on to win the Whitbread on his next outing. No idea how many were "first timers", but based on my usual tjhought processes, I'd think not many!
Apart from Rhyme n Reason and Rule The World Reebs, I backed the very same. My best success was Last Suspect. Never looked like winning but finished like a train and got up
Blaklion had a small setback after his first run of the season which wasn't devoid of promise. Ligament strain apparently and they are aiming to get a run in to him before the national. It is touch and go with the time left but I hope he makes it as he s a horse I really like and off that mark would be of interest. I m sure the owner will be hoping he gets to the race too having forked out £300k!.
Very interesting to see that connections are wasting little time in getting this one into a race following the release of the GN weights. Rocky’s Treasure entered in a Veterans Chase up at Doncaster on Wednesday. And actually if most of the runners stand their ground this Yorkshire heat could prove to be a corking contest as some real old favourites have been entered. Also should be noted that Rocky’s Treasure’s half-brother (Double Shuffle) has also been entered in this terms GN – something of a coup for the old girl dam. The latter being a year older.
I had a nibble on Bristol De Mai before the Betfair Chase last year, got 50/1, so pleased to see that he's currently as short as 20/1 with Paddy Power, slightly bigger with others at the moment... I should also add that I put down a bet on him for the Gold Cup @ 40/1 as well, but that has gone to the wall now...
Thanks stick. I see Harry is riding this time and I also notice that he rode at 10.3 11 days ago, so he can do the weight. Carrying 11.10 tomorrow. Obviously won't be trying to win
Trip suggests its a run to put him right without any possibility of affecting his mark. Will be interesting to see how he goes though.
If he has just recovered from a pulled ligament I doubt they will want to be pushing him too much with the GN being the target. I think this will be Harry trying to assess whether the GN is still on. I can't imagine Blaklion will be raced again after the GN. But if he is OK they must be licking their lips at 10.2
I thought Rocky’s Treasure ran a satisfactory (albeit not breath-taking) ‘prep’ on Wednesday. He remains a 100/1 shot for the GN. It’s now 6 weeks until the big race so I take it that he will now be prepared at home under the guidance of his trainer’s brain and hands. HEAVEN. HELP. HIM. As said before though he does need numbers to drop out to get a run. In all seriousness though he remains most interesting to my eye.
Seasonal debut for ANIBALE FLY today. Not sure what you would want to see for his National prospects? Jumped round safe and blow up between the last two?
