As Not606's go-to bigot and a filterless blurter of racial insensitivities - to the mirth of few and the vexation of most - I thought this seemed like the thread for me.

When I was a wee lad my footballing heroes included Ian Goodison, Theo Whitmore, Marc Joseph, Shaun Goater, Paolo Wanchope, Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo... all manner of melanin-rich pig-bladder-booters from across the world. I find it very strange that people are encouraged to think of themselves as capable of achieving anything they desire from life, yet simultaneously told they should seek inspiration only from those who happen to share a racial background.

Why can black girls not be inspired by blonde women? Why must a football team precisely represent the ethnic make-up of the nation at a given time? Why is a huge overrepresentation of black youth players in the U16, U18, U21 sides (often nine or ten of the starting-XI), relative to the percentage of the British/English population they account for, not considered problematic for, say, working class white boys from Hull, Plymouth, Liverpool or Sunderland? Surely they have a right to be 'represented' in sufficient numbers by those who look like them?

Good news

 

Young white poor boys are the most disadvantaged group.

I can recall NHE in the 1980s having 75% male unemployment.
In 2000 at a conference when asked what percentage of family’s on the estate came from ethnic minorities. The answer was, “no one wants to come to Hull to live as there are no jobs and if you live on NHE you will not stand a chance”.
Young black girls in sport are very well represented, just not in football, netball, rugby, cycling or cricket. The reason is not only opportunity, it’s more about interest.

 

what do city have that is similar?

 

Still have a few who sing 'Wise men say' but thankfully nowt like the numbers who sing the cringeworthy 'MOT'.

I work for a company that is pushing affirmative action...its mind boggling.

Currently they are pushing BAME and I just seen the best candidate (female) lose out on a promotion she had earned and wholeheartedly deserved.

Essentially she lost because of the colour of her skin.

I believe in equality. Being judged by ability, experience and capability.

I am an under educated under qualified white male who has struggled in a work culture because of my Northern accent and manner.

I am one of several generations who have turned to joining the Armed Services to escape the clutches of lack of opportunities.

No one has ever said that they have employed me because of my cultural background, but I have been told countless times that the reason I didn’t get the job or instruction was because of my accent and that I am from the North.

I believe in diversity, I do not believe in false and creative opportunity provision. Judge me on my abilities and capabilities not my culture or the colour of my skin.

Those in society who do not believe in a diverse world are the ones who need to open their eyes and start seeing that their focus is wrong.

The politically correct brigade are just as bad as any racist group, under representation is not a problem, feeling that you have to look for it is. Selection because of race or culture is bad no matter what the reason for it.

 

I was told in the early 80s that I didn't get a job with the Electricity Council on the Embankment because of my northern accent and they thought I was just a lad from Hull - however I just got on with it and moved on to the next opportunity - no claim culture then and telling all your friends on facebook, twitter or tiktok, or whatever they are, and running off to the press, that you were left feeling devastated, worthless and discriminated against - nobody cared
