Spot on. I've noticed that too and it's bizarre.

Almost entirely people who live in a nice house with a large garden too it seems.

Talking about haircuts...one puzzle...how is Nicola Sturgeon's hair so neat and tidy when you can't mix or go to a hairdresser's. I can only assume her husband or someone she is bubbled with is a top class hairdresser. o_O

Footballers too, I doubt all their wives and girlfriends are hairdressers and yet the vast majority clearly are constantly getting haircuts.

I would like to point out that on this message board there is one golden rule and that is that you are not allowed to say anything disparaging about the UK's top political leader the lovely Nicola. Heaven forbid if it was allowed people may start saying unkind things about Kylie Minogue and that would never do. On the other hand you can kick that useless twat Johnson and any of his chums in the balls as much and as often as you like.

Morning! I am kind of obsessed at the moment with the way the country / world is trying to find its feet with how do we deal with race after Black Lives Matter, and one of my particular fascinations is the media's engagement with Covid and the impact on BAME communities.

If you are black or Sub-continental Asian, you are more likely to die of Covid. This is absolutely a fact. However, diseases are not racist. They do not see colour. So, where is culpability for this difference to be found? Well, I have seen a fair amount of stuff about the NHS being culpable, and certainly if the BAME community does not have access to equal medical provision - say they live in areas with failing or too-busy hospitals - then this will impact them. Also, the BAME community are often nurses or work in the lower echelons of the NHS. So, rightly, NHS and national culpability is questioned.

However, when did it become totally unacceptable to question the culpability of certain cultures? Black people are the fattest - by NHS statistics - in the nation. They are more likely to be obese than any other section of society. Black people are 3 times as likely to have diabetes (type 2) than white people. Sub continental asian people are 6 times - SIX TIMES - as likely to have type 2 diabetes. They are also more likely to live in large households with their elderly relatives. They are also the least likely to take up the Covid vaccine. Again I have seen this blamed on a deep-seated distrust of UK government and the NHS - but I would call this superstition and nonsense.

So, what is my point? Everything I have written here is fact, so I am trying to avoid being called a racist! My worry is there is a real move towards cultural appeasement which endangers accurate thinking. If there is one thing I hope society takes from this it is that staying fit and healthy - no matter your colour - is massively important, but the media rhetoric around this "racist" disease" may fool some communities into thinking they were just victims and not at all responsible for their own well-being. (Also I am bored)

I think this is a great post and thanks for sharing. I have been thinking about this in a similar view for a while.

I got called 'having no balls' yesterday for something - but on this subject I didnt have any balls to say what you said, mainly because of how I am viewed on this thread and the politics one, and I feared the rhetoric coming back.

I dont think you will be called a racist, and I dont think what you have said is racist, other may disagree.

I think people can use stuff to suit their agenda, politicians do it all the time.

I also think the stuff you have posed is a far wider 'societal' discussion in general, which you phrased as cultural appeasement. There are cultures that have direct alignment with health & wealth, in that being poorer aligns with the same people being more unhealthy. I am sure education and access to healthcare services is part of this.

But, I do believe many cultural differences a a huge factor in this. I cant recall what country it was, something like Figi or somewhere over there, where they were always a very healthy nation historically. Then KFC or McDs or something were allowed to set up, and they have swung full circle as one of the fattest nations. This to me demonstrated a move away from traditional cultural values, and as such dilutes some of the things that held these cultures together. Now my point before I get lost in it, is I can see over time the same dilution happening over here, and a gradual move away from cultures. Now whilst this has some issues, it should also support a wider cultural integration with people, which can come back to the original point, of thinking and acting differently to things like health & lifestyle.

Apologies for the rambling, i think there is a point or two int here somewhere!

I get what you are saying 100%. Sometimes, it is hard to show a fact without being accused of being racist. The fact that some BAME members are more likely to get this or that doesn't imply a 'master race' if you aren't more likely, but just fact.

    An example:
I have 2 Chihuahuas, and they are more likely to get rotten teeth than a Labrador or an Alsatian - fact. All three breeds are dogs. No one breed is better than the other.

All it means is we take out dogs to the vet once a year for extractions and try to feed them stuff that won't cause their teeth to rot (though Prince has only 14 teeth left and Daisy only 7 - aged 12)

Am I a bad dog owner? I don't think so, we have tried to mitigate it by feeding them the right stuff.

Healthy diet and exercise goes a long way.

(Says the half asian man who ate like a pig last night and had a bottle of wine..though I did do a 3 mile walk and 30 mins of apple fitness ;) )

There was a programme on the BBC last night as to why Covid is impacting BAME communities so much more. I haven't watched it, but it may be worth checking out.

Yep I saw that and am going to look on iPlayer for it.

Without watching I think that some of it is genetic, but the social cultural aspect also has an impact.

I always thought Italy was affected adversely at first due to things like an ageing population and the cultural family aspect that families live together sometimes for generations, and Italians are more 'touchy feely' than say Brits are. Other factors are at work too, but can't be ignored.
