He can't buy or loan players until the summer, but I believe that we can sign players who are available on a free(?) If so let's hope he has his scouts out there scouring the free market for a left-back and a holding midfielder.
His first priority needs to be stopping the rot and keeping us in the Championship. If we get anywhere near the playoffs it would be a miracle and not worth thinking about right now.
Of course, it's possible that he (Pearson) could simply walk away from us at the end of the season if he doesn't like working with the SL, JL and MA and we'd be back where we started all over again.

It's almost better to ensure survival and for once do some proper planning ahead of the new season, when hopefully, we'll have proper sized crowds back.
With all of the long term injuries I don't believe that this squad is capable of a top 6 finish anyway but I also believe there are 3 worse teams than us in the division and with all of the others beating each other, it will take a very strange turn of events to see us in real trouble. Having said that, if we'd left it a few more games before appointing Pearson then it may have been different.

I don't think even without all of the injuries we would have a squad capable of a top 6 finish. Not even close IMHO.

As for 3 worse teams, we beat Sheff Weds probably fair and square, we were lucky at home to Wycombe, well beaten by Rotherham and well beaten by Luton who are now 2 points behind us with a game in hand, unless Pearson can find a formula for getting results against strong physical sides, I still see it as an uphill battle.

I still think we have enough decent players for at least a mid table finish.....First few months of the season, we were at least competing, where as now it seems the towel has been thrown in....they haven't become $hit overnight...The confidence has defiantly been drained away.....Hopefully, NP has enough knowhow and experience to get the best from the current squad, change things around a bit, play to their strengths etc, and turn results around..

What we have to see and i think this is a two way partnership-We hope NP likes what he sees at Ashton Gate -the interesting thing is Leicester-Watford-Sheff Weds fans think we done fantastic business in getting NP IN.

Obviously as Rodney knows i have wanted NP here for some time-good things come to those that wait.

Watford he had the best points to games ratio in their history-let's hope he sorts these pusseys out and gets us back up the table.

I wish I could agree, we have too many players who have at best 4 good games per season, like Paterson, ODowda, Diedhiou, Hunt, Nagy and we have made matters worse with Mariappa and Lansbury.

For me take away our cup performance v Millwall and the last convincing home performance was Sheff Weds and away QPR and Huddersfield.

We lack consistent players, out of our present squad only Bentley and Kalas are the only players who would stand a chance of bettering themselves in the transfer market.

As said before, it's all about opinions.....IMO we defo have enough decent players to finish at least mid-table with the right manager.....I imagine NP feels the same, otherwise he wouldn't have taken the job..

I admit am inclined to agree with RP and Jiffie on this - I don't think our squad is balanced enough to push for the playoffs. We have individuals with specific talents it's true, but we are so threadbare we are having to play them out of position to cover absent team-mates, which diminishes the effectiveness of the team as a whole.
However - in our first championship season under SC for example. We were in freefall, and Pembo/LJ stopped the rot immediately using the very same players that were failing, but deploying them differently (not Cotts-bashing btw).
Same with Cardiff and Mick McCarthy - the same players are playing better now than they were before. In fact I hate to say it but Cardiff look like a very good team now - and MM achieved that almost overnight.
'I imagine NP feels the same, otherwise he wouldn't have taken the job..'
.. this is a very good point. NP wouldn't accept an impossible task and certainly won't want a relegation on his CV. Maybe he sees something that us 'doubters' can't?

I agree, we have enough in the squad, when all fully fit, to finish in the top 10. Look around the Championship, with a few notable exceptions, our squad is better than a lot. I said before, when a lot on here were dissing on him, that Weimann would be a huge loss for us. His pace and ability to find space scares defenders, we just don't have that up top now to create chances.

I also agree that too many players are far too inconsistent, and should depart the club in the summer, Pato, Fammy. O'Dowda etc.

    Jiffie's right no doubt.
Kalas and Bentley are the only players worth a place in a decent Championship side.
The senior players are spineless and the younger ones aren't up to it, might be one day but not this season.
I believe/pray we'll get a dead cat bounce and avoid relegation.
Pearson will then massively change the side next season thus proving the poor squad inherited by Holden.

    Supcon.
Other than Kalas and Bentley I'm interested to know who you think would get in a 'top 10 side'.

Fammy will be gone in the summer.
Regarding the inconsistency of the others; I haven't worked out if they are simply not good enough or if they are hindered by the square pegs in round holes around them. O'Dowda started to play well before his injury and Pato has his moments too - maybe with a stable squad around them they might be more consistent?

Jiffie, RP and I myself have often picked out Kalas and Bentley as the only players of Premiership quality we have - but they are also players that have not been asked to play out of position. Neither do their individual positions rely on other players around them 'feeding' them. What I'm trying to say is that finding the right players to fill the gaps could release some of our other players who are 'inconsistent' right now to play to their strengths? I really hope so, but right now I simply don't know.

I don't see it a huge loss if he goes. He has always been a marmite sort of a player for me, and whilst he scored a few goals, his overall attitude at times leaves more than a little to be desired and his first touch is often pathetic.
O'Dowda is also very inconsistent. Patterson has his moments, but again lacks consistency.
I trust Pearson will quickly suss out who is up to the job and who isn't and hopefully we'll get rid of a lot of dead wood in the Summer.
Agree that only Bentley and Kalas can take any sort of credit for the season so far and they are both players I'd retain.

Well, we're stuck with them until the end of the season anyway.
I keep thinking of players that we let go - we thought were 'ok' - even quite good at best, but not Premiership class, like Luke Ayling, Luke Freeman, Chris Wood - even Josh Brownhill was 'meh' in some people's opinion, but they went on to better things after leaving us. We didn't get the best out of them.
I'd be extremely frustrated if Paterson and/or O'Dowda went to another club and started playing well.

Sorry to reply to two of your post.
Any free player would need a minimum 6/8 games to get fully match fit so can’t see that being an option. Plus if you look at transfermarket for left backs it’s a really poor selection as we will be restricted to UK based.
Cardiff had Keifer Moore out injured when they went on that bad run. His return coincided with McCarthy’s first game.

However what I see happening now, is players wanting to play for Pearson and the OOC players may step up to the plate as in Diedhiou for a start.

I believe we have better players than most think.....but of them they need better players around to get the most out of them..Or a manager that will coach more movement & space for them to exploit..
I know, not everyone's cup of tea, but I still like the likes of O'Dowda, Paterson, Palmer, Messengo, Semmy, Vyner, Nagy even Dasilva..just maybe not in the same lineup...but good to have in the squad.

Key Bristol City figure opens up on Nigel Pearson appointment

Bristol City owner Steve Lansdown has revealed experience was a factor in appointing Nigel Pearson, who was the club’s top target.

The former Leicester City boss was named as Dean Holden’s successor yesterday, and he will be watching on from the stands as the Robins travel to take on Middlesbrough this evening.

Given his pedigree, with Pearson having won promotion from the Championship, as well as managing regularly in the top-flight, this was seen as a coup for Bristol City.

And, speaking to TalkSPORT, as quoted by reporter Gregor MacGregor, Lansdown gave an insight into how the process went, as he revealed further talks will take place at the end of the season about Pearson’s long-term future.

We had to move quickly as the confidence was slipping away… He [Pearson] was well up on the list of people we wanted to speak to. We’ll talk about things properly in the summer.

Nigel came top of our list and was available. We had a very good conversation and frank exchange of views on what he and we wanted to do. He’s keen to take it on. It was his decision [to watch tonight; not be in charge]. We wanted someone with the experience.”
    The verdict
This is encouraging for Bristol City because they have landed their top target, and most believe that this is a smart appointment.

Targeting a proven, experienced coach was the right move given the alarming run of form the team have been on.

Now, it’s down to Pearson to get to work, and if it all works well everyone will hope a longer agreement can be reached in the summer, to give the club stability.

On the surface the appointment of Pearson as our manager is one of the wisest decisions made by Bristol City in many years and if he can get better out of the motley crew currently calling themselves players then it could get even more exciting. Let's face the facts in that we currently only have a bunch of bargain basement under performing players more than happy to show up and grab the money but who seem unwilling to play their part out on the pitch. The over 10 million we wasted on Fammy and Massengo sticks in my throat because I just for the life of me couldn't see any worth in signing one of them, yet alone both, and the pleas to boost the squad as always fell on deaf ears. Some of the signings over the last 3 to 4 years sounded good on paper only to dissolve in to dissatisfaction and eventual exit from a club that supposedly was going to put their skills to great use in a newly formed power in the Championship. As we all know the wheels started to come off accompanied by many questions as to whether our owner truly knew what he expected from his football team and his decision to hire Pearson was a shock for me as it proves that this time out he means business.

Going down the route of seeing how things work out between now and the end of the season is a wise move because it opens up the possibility of NP offering a longer term solution to our annual problems and hopefully joining us on a longer term. The trial period will give both sides an opportunity to take a long hard look at each other before committing to a longer term contract, assuming that they don't clash heads in the meantime.

Welcome aboard Nigel and from here in Canada I send you all my best wishes for a successful time in charge of my beloved team. :smiley-finger007:

    NP on City's ambitions
Yes [the long term future here excites] - I would imagine our fanbase doesn't want to hear the word potential too much. What we have is a really good foundation to make the next step and everybody's aspirations is to get out of the Championship. what I do identify with is the club's ethos on how they do that. What we have to do is finish the season with a positive message. The medium and long-term future is bright but having the infrastructure is one thing, doing it is another. I'm one for living in the moment. We have to be pragmatic at the moment. The club has so much going for it, we have a fantastic fanbase. Geographically we have the chance to have an identity of our own.

    NP on long term plans
I'd like to [stay longer] - I'd like to be here longer but as Steve said it's an opportunity to have a look at each other. I fully understand the situation. I heard Neil Warnock speaking in his pre-match press conference about short-term contracts... We came to a decision very carefully and I'm happy in my skin and I'm happy to fulfil my obligations. It's not something I'm concerned about. I take the job on thinking that potentially it will be longer. But myself and the staff have to stabilise the situation first.

I think Fam is affected by lack of fans, he often seems to take energy from them any gees us up, different players respond differently to lack of fans at grounds , just my opinion.
