Was talking to a colleague earlier about the atmosphere nowadays compared to when we first moved to the sol and he mentioned a game when i remember it being incredible. Play Off semi final against Sheff Utd. If my memory serves me right it was a foggy evening and there was a certain electricity in the air that you don't get often. The atmosphere was unbelievable and one of the very best i can remember. Beating Chelsea 4-1 stands out for me too and the derby where we were 2-0 down and Phillips equalized late on to earn a 2-2 draw. i used to sit in the second row of the ne corner then and dashed to the front and got swept in a wave of people almost to the halfway line, i remember watching it over and over on the season review video. Incredible stuff and id love us to get that magic back. What are other peoples memories of great atmospheres at the sol?
I think you've picked probablyb the 3 best atmospheres I can remember in your opening post!! Sheff Utd was unbelievable - Chelsea - I had £2 on 4-0 at something like 300/1 and Poyet (the inconsiderate bastard) wrecked my Saturday night!!! The earlier seasons and in the yoyo years (which we all hated but secretly loved the promotion from the Championship) were tremendous at times when the grtound was so full they had to extend it - now we can't even fill the original capacity - due to poor football and the financial world at the moment!! One of these days we'll get back to something like it
Chelsea 4-1 for me I was behind the goal when SKP blasted that 25 yarder in, I was just about the coldest I have ever been at that point because I forgot my coat and only had a T-Shirt on but I soon forgot about the cold as our goals went in.
I loved each of those but my favourite was actually the Burnley game under Keane when we won 3-2 I think, with Edwards scoring that absolute screamer to win it. We were probably gonna go up anyway but just the quality of the game, mixed with the circumstances and the fact it was such a good goal to win it really made it some night.
Another great moment. is there just something about night matches? We don't seem to have many at home these days. Another just popped to mind. a moment that i feel is arguably the most important in this 'Quinn era', the moment Michael C****a trapped a Ross Wallace cross on the opening day of the season against spurs and put it in the back of the net " WE ARE BACK". Im feeling very sentimental today. haha.
The first competitive game Man city at home won 3-1 and a certain philips made his bow!! i had a RAF mate up for the weekend(man city fan) and it was just great night and weekend!!!
Good one mate I was in Liverpool for that one watching a band got to see the last couple of goals surrounded by student gits and one other Mackem when the final whistle went the bar sort of emptied strange. Was at the Sheff Utd game and that has to be the best for me.
I would go along with the Shef United play-off match being the best atmosphere at the SoL... I also remember one of the Mags games when we came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 being a canny one...
I echo the Sheff Utd atmosphere quotes, I will never forget that but you compare that to now its unbelievable, people dont know what they are missing.
If you talk about about best ever atmosphere at a match i have been too in 34 years, it was the 1985 milk cup final (101,000 gate!). Anyone who was there will tell you when the teams came out you were virtually deafened and it actually brought tears to my eyes, because wembley was unique for sound by the shape of it. At the SOL the Newcastle match we won 2-1 was superb and the Sheff u game also. Best result ever Mags 0-2 Sunderland 1990 play off semi final 2nd leg! before sky t v!.
Was in line with the skid marks left from the knee slide after the celebration. Remember it is as vividly as anything else, the celebration that is, I can't seem to remember the match much.
Absolutely the Sheff United match, by a ****ing mile, better than derbies, the lot, it was unreal that night. Loudest noise i think was when Carlos' rocket went in against Burnley, but the atmosphere that night was ok, rather than unreal.
sheff utd semi final play off (2-0) man utd 2-2 burnley 3-2 derby 2-1 mags 2-1 mags 2-2 chelsea 4-1 mags 1-1 none of them a patch on a bouncing roker park like, sadly
