I couldn't get a ticket for that game, and I remember being absolutely gutted beforehand..However, that performance was a great remedy for that...
I'm a bit young for 73 but anyone else remember the ticketing in 92. I was 11 at the time and didnt have a season ticket so the only way to get a final ticket was to attend 3 home league games in a week or so, collecting a voucher at each one, then being entered into a ticket lottery. Cant remember who we played but we were struggling badly in the league and 3 games where crowds would have been sparse ended up absolutely rammed ar Roker Park. Very surreal at the time but luckily did the trick with my dad managing to sort final tickets out.
They done the same in 1973 mate..They issued the vouchers for the semi-final at a relatively meaningless league fixture (we were safely in the middle of the then 2nd division) against Oxford United, and pulled in a crowd well in excess of 40,000.
i agree, absolutely breathtaking save, don't know if it got the recognition it deserved at the time like
Good heavens I am old. I was in that bank of Sunderland Supporters behind our goal in the second half. All standing and their were huge surges forward at times, IIRC nobody was hurt and I think we tried to blow the George goal away as it crept over the line from Monty's touch. Again IIRC several coaches stopped at the Barnsley Radical and Liberal CLub on the way back and we all got slaughtered. I had forgotten we were in white and the Arse in their change strip as well, Vic Halom looked good did he not! Happy days
He turned around in mid air ffs! I've never seen footage of that save that comes close to doing it justice.
