Good Morning. It's Wednesday 17th February, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

Manchester Utd join race for Raphinha

Italian Journalist Gianluigi Longari has taken to social media to reveal that Manchester Utd have joined Liverpool in the pursuit of Leeds winger Raphinha.

The 24yo joined the Whites last Summer for 17m, which with the amount of interest he is attracting from Anfield and Old Trafford seems a drop in the Ocean!

What price would you realistically put round the neck of Raphinha?

Controversial TalkSport host leaps to the defence of Leeds Utd - again

Controversial TalkSport host Adrian Durham has once again leapt to the defence of Leeds Utd following their 4-2 defeat at the Emirates at the weekend. Many fans from around the Country took to social media to voice their opinion that Leeds Utd do not play entertaining football!

The supersized ginger whinger from TalkSport Towers is better known for voicing contentious opinions to create debate, and why not - controversy creates cash, but it seems the 51yo has a soft spot for Leeds Utd. This is what he had to say on his Drive Time show:-

"At Arsenal, Leeds were four down early in the second half, and the usual football bozos slithered to the surface on social media to declare that Leeds were not entertaining,"

"And they thankfully slithered away again when they realised Leeds carried on playing the way they were playing and got themselves back into the game.

"And actually it was a very entertaining game. So I'd like to ask all those football experts that are slithering away, why is Leeds' style not considered entertaining to you?

"Just explain that to me. Because if you lose a game or concede goals, does that automatically mean you are not entertaining, or is that over-simplifying it to try to justify some sort of anti-Leeds stance that you've always had for whatever reason?"

"All the Bielsa deniers, are they aware that only one of Leeds' back four was in his proper position because of all the injuries they've got?

"Apparently, it's OK for Liverpool to use that as an excuse but not a newly-promoted side that are going to survive comfortably, which is a bit weird.

"(Jamie) Shackleton and (Ezgjan) Alioski are not natural back four material, (Luke) Ayling is a full-back more than a centre-back, (Liam) Cooper is the only one (in his normal position), and he probably wouldn't be in the team if everyone was fit - it might well be (Diego) Llorente and (Robin) Koch at centre-half instead of Cooper.

    Pundits and commentators on TV

Equality in football has come a long way in the last twenty years. Today, we see female linesman and lady referee's at the top level, and on the increase, racism on the terraces being irradiated, and the once dominated male orientated punditry / commentary a thing of the past.

I wanted to concentrate on the punditry / commentary. I myself would much rather have a small panel of Super Leeds fans, say Andrew Dalton, Heidi Haigh and Gary Edwards. In my humble opinion, any one of the three would have more insight into our great club in their little finger than any pundit or former player looking for a pay day to voice the blinking obvious?

Many of us come from an older generation when punditry was dominated by men! Obviously, there are good and bad examples for both sexes, but does anyone believe the involvement with female punditry has spoilt your enjoyment of proceedings?

Which female broadcasters do you prefer over male ones?

Do you miss the likes of Andy Gray, Martin Tyler and Richard Keys?

    Morning all :emoticon-0148-yes:

    Todays big question is why?

Why was Radz at the Nou Camp last night
Why is he allowed to jet into Spain and into a big football match?
Was he a guest of PSG so came in with the PSG squad?
Was he a guest of Barca so looking to do a deal for Riqui Puig?
He was with a UFC guy but why?

On the pundits debate my view is that we should get the option of watching/hearing local fans like Stats and Heidi etc, but that the wider National audience should still get some informed analysis from top pundits.

Top pundits are few and far between and the likes of Andy Gray and Ron Atkinson are the very best, but PC bollox got in the way. Gary Neville is one of the very best and there are more around, but they are now the minority as the box tickers have taken over. We now have to have quotas of females, gays, blacks etc and if the truth were known football fans dont give a crap about ethnicity, sexuality or gender as long as they are knowledgable on the subject. However there are so many box tickers that have diluted the pool, at least in the Championship we only had to put up with idiots like Andrews etc but in the Prem we get a massive array of shyte talking stupidity from tv radio and press

    Morning all,

I have to agree with everything that Adrian Durham said on Talkshite above. The only problem is give it a week and he will flip flop his opinion to the exact opposite if it means getting listening numbers or clicks on social media. Can not be taken seriously for that reason. The only person on Talkshite who stands by their views all the time is Simon Jordan. He is the most knowledgeable pundit on their and speaks the most sense.

As for pundits as a whole. There is now so much coverage of football on multiple broadcasters made more so by every current Prem game being shown on tv.

This means that more commentators/pundits are needed meaning standards are lowered to cover the spots. If you are an ex player and are willing to offer an opinion you can get a spot on tv, radio, podcast or newspaper column.

The whole above situation is then made worse by the need to tick boxes hiring minority and female pundits. This again thins the pool of people to choose from and again allows anyone with an opinion to get a job.

I am going to use 9 ball pool as an example as something struck me while watching the Mosconi Cup back in December. For the 25plus years I have watched this annual tournament the commentators have been excellent adding something to the event with knowledge and charisma.

2020 was the first year to feature a female commentator, Allison Fisher. Fisher is a multi time snooker and pool world champion and no doubt very knowledgeable person when it comes to cue sports. The problem comes in that she is so void of personality and spoke in a monotone drone she brought nothing to the enjoyment of the event, in fact the opposite.

If she had been hired because she was the best for the role she no doubt would have needed to be interviewed, auditioned and screen tested. I am certain that at any of these points a producer would have said "Sorry, not tv material." However, she ticked a box.

The same can be said about our friend Karen Carney. Ignoring the whole "Coronagate" incident if you ever actually listen to her commentate or punditry her voice is just so monotone it is hard to actually listen to what she is saying. I have listened and she does make good points but to be on tv you need a personality and that is lacking in too many pundits these days.

Add that to the pundits white, black or female who talk out of their arses and you can see why people get riled up and brings out the bigots and sexists to give abuse.

This from hemese is exactly it :emoticon-0148-yes:
As an example there is one non sportswoman who does all sorts of sports and I can listen/watch her all day long. She researches everything so comes across as knowledgeable. Yes she does horse racing, darts, golf, swimming, ice skating, athletics, even Crufts. Claire Balding A class act and yes a lesbian and yes a woman but nobody cares as she has an enthusiastic personality. Karen Carney is a thick cockney twat

The two female pundits at the top of their game are Gabby Logan & Alex Scott.
Logan is a consummate professional like Docs example Balding.
Scott is an excellent pundit with a strong knowledge base and also a personality for TV.
She is what the likes of Carney should be striving for.

As soon as half time comes I turn off. Back on for 2nd half and just listen to the comments after the game fron our boss and players. I've no interest in listening to female commentators or pundits. <ok>

Because Sky like a lot of those leftie influenced media clowns are hypocrites. On the one hand they sack some ex pros because they either won't wear or question the wearing of political badges, but like you say keep on their books a lad who spits at girls.<grr>

Well I can support your claim about Sky Shaks.
When I was in Qatar I got to know a guy who was working for Aljazeera news and was previously with Sky, and he told me that Kay Burley had shagged her way to the top, currently she is not on the air for making a statement that was derogatory BUT not been sacked.

Female commentators/pundits should just comment on ladies football. As for Carney, I was watching a match the other evening and had to turn the sound off <grr> she's so monotone and clueless :headbang:

I've now got more respect for the boring twat Don Goodman who sounds like Barry Davies or John Motson in comparison to her - which is an achievement in itself - so well done Karen <applause> :emoticon-0136-giggl

What really boils my piss Essex is when they spout on about equality for women, which is fine by me, but when they get flak for their opinions they revert back to the but I'm a female bollocks.<grr>

I have to disagree. There is no reason why female pundits can't feature on men's football. They just have to be good at what they do.

Because female pundits are being forced through instead of making their way up the ladder naturally it is creating views like this one which is ultimately going to do more harm then the good the concept of box ticking is supposed to accomplish.

That's the problem in a lot of other areas of work and the entertainment industry. Employers aren't employing the people with the best qualifications. They have to like you say tick certain boxes. <ok>
