Nice to see not all fans of rival clubs are getting on Rooneys back.

Its just daft to start harrassing the best player england have over a red card. Doesnt achieve anything and will have negative effects on the whole team.

The press is clearly intending for this to happen as england failing seems to be their preferred headline.

The press just want England to fail miserably. The way they look at it, if England perform bravely, get to the semi finals and are narrowly beaten by a clearly superior Spanish or Dutch side there is nothing really to write about. The only way they get a big story is if we either win something or fail miserably. We haven't a cat's chance in hell of winning the thing, so all the press want us to fail as badly as possible so they can write "comment" articles blaming everyone from the manager to the tea lady.

And what's the best way to make us fail? Get everyone on the back's of our best player.

    ****s, all of them...

They should be focusing on Titus bramble being a rapist drug dealer , this country loves to ruin it's best players mate and to be honest all he did was kick him yellow would be enough really. I mean all he's ever done is cheat on his lass, swear and sent off on rare occasions, people forget they all have done it.

ffs grow some balls man, if i was him I'd get sent off a few times I'm sure. I think it's time we all backed are best rather than let our differences tear them apart. We all want England to do well and he's are only world class player in my opinion. Gazza was a few years back and we all loved him so why not just back him?

I have to admit, I did want England to do well in South Africa. Not because I'm an England supporter, far from it. But because Rio was captain and Rooney was the main man. They had that United core so I wanted the United players to do well. But yet again, the way that United English players are portrayed is causing the gap between club and country for fans to widen even more.

The press aren't ruining it for him, he and his family are doing it for themselves. They say when will he learn, the answer is probably never. They say that SAF needs to mature him, didn't he say he would do that after the Camera swearing incident?
Englands best striker?...how did he do in the last 2 competitions? We are better off without him. Sturridge should be leading the forward line come June.

What other strikers? You mean Heskey, Defoe and Owen? I hope non of them make it either. Welbeck and Sturridge should be in contention.

That's my point, for some reason everyone has this idea that it was only Rooney that was poor in the last world cup when in actual fact almost to a man they were ****. Yet he gets the blame on his shoulders.

Like jonnyaiston above claiming he's a liability. Really? Who's goals and contributions get us to these finals? Who played a major part on both our goals on Friday? Are we REALLY better off without him?

    No, are we ****.

I'm not in anyway defending him, he's a loose cannon, hothead all rolled into one and should cut it out but he's been sent off twice in over 70 England games and that is hardly a liability given his other contributions. We'd be ****ed without him, even worse than we already are.

You mean the 3 goals in the past 16 games? No where near as instrumental as the media and people try to make out! (A bit like everyone saying Beckham was the god of free kicks, he really wasn't). The Media don't help England one bit, putting all this pressure on.

The fact England seem to rely on Rooney so much is pathetic, it is a team game after all, look at Greece Euro 2004, poor individuals turned into an awesome team...for a tournament, need to learn to play without him or England are going to get nowhere(aren't going to get far without him either mind).

It's when his sending offs are and how he gets sent off that pisses people off, hes a complete idiot. Also many other times he has kicked out at players that adds to why I think hes a liability.

He's been sent off twice. Considering he's played over seventy games for England and it is much more easy to get sent off nowadays than it used to be, that isn't a lot.

As I said in my post above, he was instrumental in both our goals on Friday night and so his game is about far more than just scoring. That's obvious really to be honest. He's more than goal scoring centre forward. I agree that Welbeck and Sturridge would be excellent foils for him though, both should be in the squad.

It is ridiculous that we (the press really) pin our hopes on one individual so much but to drop that individual would mean they simply turn their attention to the next unfortunate scapegoat.

I disagree that Rooney is a liability. It's not great that he's got himself banned for probably the first two games of the finals but his overall contribution is such that he's worth the risk.
