When I worked in France for nearly a year every night was Leffe night ! It was frequently combined with Super Bock which is a Portugese lager that we also used to drink gallons of.
The Hen & Chicken used to have Leffe on draught (at a price!) but I've not been there for a while so I don't know if they were still selling it at Lockdown. The Windmill in Windmill Hill used to sell Lowenbrau but they've closed down. That was a beer to really send you loopy !
And the Hare in North St used to sell Erdinger which I love but they'd changed it for something not as good last time I went there.
So meantime I'm choking down Peroni and Heineken until Tesco and Asda want my custom back
I've seen several people get lairy on Stella and especially Snake Bite over the years. Happy days <cheers>

All those beers (apart from Stella), are beers I absolutely love!
I remember an embarrassing moment when I was in Hannover, Germany, back in 1989, complaining about a pint of Erdinger Weissenbeir because it was cloudy and obviously 'not right' - the barmaid explained that it was SUPPOSED to be cloudy. I felt THAT small!!!!
The Germans get their beer spot-on. I'm slightly disappointed in the Czechs though - I love Budvar, but was (only slightly) disappointed when I went to Prague a few years ago - maybe my expectations were set too high.....

it may be down to "unit" value... I am not that much up on it … 1 unit of beer =? so how does beer at 3.8 v beer at 4.8 / 5% compare. All I know is freeze for a short while surrounded by stuff in freezer take out pour liquid into a another bottle pre chilled, allow ice on removed bottle to thaw and pour into measuring jug, repeat a number of times .. should you start with 500ml @5% [ you should have 25ml alcohol ] so when you have left 250ml … how much alcohol do you have! ……. answer at a later date .

It's not a "unit of beer", it's a unit of alcohol whatever you drink - beer, wine, spirits etc.

I think a 330ml bottle of Peroni @ 5.1% has 1.7 units of alcohol in it. Hence Drakeford says we can't by that for less than 85p @ 50p per unit.
 
Now I'm not saying it's for any of you purists, the barley might have come from the wet side of the field and the water from the Mendips but a few times when the ambre nectar (Stella) is unavailable at Aldi I have scoured the shelves for a replacement, I discovered their own brand premium lager called 'Saint Etienne', the flavour is quite friendly, the strength is 4.8%, a 4 pack costs £2.79, it's a 4ooml can and it fills my pint Stella glass, it's not Stella but it's a bloody good value drink and you get more bang for your buck without having a row with the Mrs.

I don’t like drinking out of cans either. But then I can’t stand Stella and only drank it when nothing else available.
I used to drink Guiness but now being confirmed celiac (was diagnosed in 2002, but ignored it. Now could be paying the price for that) I had to give that up.
I like the Italian lagers and Peroni do a gluten free version (only difference just a bit sweeter) so that is my drink at the moment. No idea what I’m going to do in pubs as I doubt that would be rare to get, so probably be vodka and lemonade.

The Welsh plant staff love working on the English side they stock up. It reminds me when people used to do the French trips <laugh><laugh><laugh>

absolutely so how does 3.8% compare to 4.8% what is the base line? are they both 1 unit or +/- above base?
We normally drink a set measure of spirit in a small quantity [ refererred as [ x?] gill

The case of Peroni I bought recently out of desperation was £9 for 10x330ml bottles
So if I was in Wales that would have cost me a minimum of £8.50 so you've got the slightly better deal on that one for now.
Just been to my local Asda and Stella is still £14.00 for 20x284ml bottles so it's staying on the shelf. Of course with us all in lockdown it's a nice easy earner for all the supermarkets who can basically charge us what they want for 'essentials' <laugh>

That was probably a bad example of mine for the minimum 50p per unit minimum affecting us over here. Peroni is expensive anyway and I doubt it would ever fall foul of the "minimum cost" rule. We struggle to get a 330ml bottle for much less than a quid.

The rule tends to affect the likes of the normally less expensive Stella, Grolsch and Becks brands which you can get cheaper across there though their lower alcy strengths does help keep the "Welsh" price down a bit - but not as cheap as yours.

I had an argument with a virtually teetotal colleague once about health and alcohol.
As a drinker, of course I'm aware that consuming large volumes of alcohol is bad for you, but I argued that consuming the alcohol in pints of beer, lager or cider, in pint form, was less bad for you than consuming the same quantity of alcohol in spirit or wine form. He disagreed, saying that 'alcohol was alcohol', no matter it was consumed.
I stand by my conviction.
When you drink a pint of beer at, say 5% alcohol, you also consume 95% water (plus other trace ingredients - including the evil ingredient if it's Stella!!!). This dilutes the alcohol. The alcohol is still there, and ingested of course, but for every 1ml of alcohol the body has to process, there is 20ml of water to 'flush' the system, which eases the strain very slightly.
When you drink a (double) shot of vodka, say, at 40% alcohol (a double shot contains approx the same volume of alcohol as an 'average' pint), for every 1ml of alcohol the body has to process there is only 1.5ml of water, making the mixture stronger and therefore more harmful to the body. Wine at 15% works on the same principle - for every 1ml processed there is only 6.6ml water. He just couldn't (or rather wouldn't) get it and maintained that it was exactly the same.
It's like the difference between drinking a cordial like Ribena in shot form at a 40/60% mix, or mixing it with 95% water.

As I said, the over-consumption of alcohol is bad for you - there's no denying, but don't let anyone tell you that there is absolutely NO difference WHAT type of tipple you choose to over-consume!

Remember - drink responsibly.

I've drunk rather a lot since I was about 17. I'm now 60
My second ever job was as a Computer Operator and I stayed there for 18 years. We worked 8 hour shifts during the week and we did overtime at weekends of 13 hour shifts. The culture was literally round the clock drinking at work for those 18 years, and especially in the local pubs in Temple Meads, Pennywell Road and Stokes Croft areas as we had computer 3 sites at one time. The Temple Meads site went by the board eventually. Lock in's in various pubs were common and drink driving was the norm in the earliest days. Tut tut ! A few of us were caught, most escaped being detected.
Working on overtime at weekends 80% of our time was literally spent in a pub or pubs and the incoming night shift would drive us home as we'd catch public transport to work.
And I've never lost the taste for it <cheers>
I do drink Wine, Gin and Whisky occasionally as well as Stella.

A couple of those are before my time.
I used to love the Greyhound when I first started working, although the beer was pretty naff but they seemed to have loads of bars and you could never find anyone !
 
Believe it or not back in the 60's the Cat and Wheel was still up on Castle Green trading, right next door to the Bear and Rugged Staff, you would walk out of the door and straight into the other, 2 fabulous old scruffy, tough pubs but we had some great times in there, they were nearly falling down but they kept going for years,we all used to drink pints of Brown or Light splits, Courage Bitter 11d pint old money, no bloody lager, packet of 10 woodbines 1 shilling and tuppence, Smiths original crisps 6d a packet.

The Rummer market bar was our regular haunt when I was working in Bristol.
I see it's still there, but now an eatery which only sells beer in bottles.
The front bar has looked boarded up and closed for many years.
I remember in the mid 1980s they used to sell Newquay Steam beers - remember them?

One pub I used to frequent often was the Mendip Gate. The pub was a bit naff but the building was an old convent I believe - a great big place - now demolished and there's a small estate there now. I can't find ANY photos of it as a pub.

We used to regularly drink Newquay Steam Stout and Lager at the Armoury Tavern on Stapleton Road close to Lebeqs.
The Armoury is long closed and Steam beer disappeared as well. But happy drunken days all round.
Also used to frequent the Full Moon, King Charles, and Bristol Tavern on Stokes Croft and we used to do pub crawls from the Wellington at the very top of Gloucester Road right down to Stokes Croft stopping at every pub on the way, and there were a lot back in the day, even if only for a half.
