This reminds me of some absolute goons in my block have created a “Residents Association” which is referred to in the Facebook group as the RA. Every day so far I’ve resisted the urge to reply with “ooh ahh up the RA” but really don’t know how much longer I can stop myself.

Even if the Republican Party rids itself of Trump, it’s senior politicians are calculating that they can’t get elected without his supporters.

I suspect the Donald Trump show is in it’s final act, tbh. Won’t he still be pursued through civil and criminal courts, or will all those outstanding cases, from tax fraud to obstructing justice to outstanding unpaid debt, be wiped clean after impeachment? Not sure. But I think he’s finished. An awful lot of people voted for him though, and they’re not going away.

The Yanks are also much more susceptible to radicalisation imo. We think of the Tory party as being right wing, but compared to some of the Republican Congressmen and women, they are fairly middle of the road. There's also some deep seated prejudices in the US that go right back to its formation as a nation and a thriving undercurrent of white supremacy and Bible belt extremism.

Add to that a highly partisan media and a deep seated mistrust of Govt from some quarters and you've got a heady mix that internet conspiracy theorists have thrived on. Throw some small arms into the equation too and you can see why it all kicked off.

It was all there, Trump leeched off of that energy to fuel his own personal ambitions for power and in the process, lit the blue touch paper.

Despite my metropolitan liberal elite credentials I don’t currently reside in Islington.

Islington might become affordable again soon. Covid bonus, if all the City types continue working from home indefinitely. Which a lot will, I think.

Which reminds me, I had a dream last night that I was offered a council flat in Trafalgar Square, with a small garden (yeah, I know). But I had to turn it down, because the garden wouldn’t have got enough light to grow tomatoes.

I dunno mate, I reckon voters can be a fairly fickle bunch. When the GOP stand another candidate up in 2024 there will be that same base that will vote for them simply because it's not a Democrat.

Oh yeah, absolutely. Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley are already positioning themselves as inheritors of Trump’s MAGA base.

Ted Cruz is an opportunistic little snake. He'll fit in well with the MAGA base.

Cruz knows the demographic in Texas is shifting against him, due in part to immigration from Central America, but mostly to a growing urban vs declining rural population. So he won’t be dropping the “Cruz” anytime soon, but he will be counting on right wing populism (to which the Hispanic community isn’t totally immune either) to shore up his support.

The Hispanic community are fairly conservative with a small 'c'. Deep seated Catholic values, anti abortion and of course a troubled history with Communism.

The fact that Trump wanted to build a wall to keep them out didn't seem to bother huge swathes of the voting community either.

Shades of “pull the ladder up, Jack” there.

It’s the same here with Priti Patel, being so keen to make life hard for future generations of immigrants to the U.K.

I think if you break down the republican vote at the last election, there’s republicans and there’s Trumpers. I’d wager that somewhere between 15-20% of their vote fell into the latter category. The republicans thinking they have to appease them is misguided, as who else are they going to vote for? They’ve been convinced the Democrats are Chinese communists ffs, so whilst some might stay at home or vote for some gun toting red neck independent, the majority will fall into line. The republicans need to head back towards the centre ground if they’re to win back power.
