Hello, again team. Hope everyone A-OK and tickety. Cor blimey though that ‘Beast from the East’ is proving to be something of a rotter. What, what?!? It’s abandoning meetings like a…like a…like an abandoning meetings beast. Boo-hiss, say I.
How terrible, by the way, to see Saturday's 'Game Spirit Chase' at Newbury renamed the 'Betfair Cheltenham Free Bet Pot Builder Chase'. Furthermore, its not that easy to say. Especially for any trainer who has a dozen GnT's too many prior to 'tapes up'.
Morning 7.45 Wolverhampton-Charles Le Brun Each Way @ 6-1 [Skybet]...4 places Trainer good at placing his horses
Sporting Life website has Andrea Atzeni riding Metier in the Betfair Hurdle on Saturday - surely that is bollocks?
Given how dull it is without racing in the day today, I decided to solve the Pertemps at the festival. After watching a bit of David Suchet I now feel like the great man, slightly rotund, ageing and probably going senile, no not Nicky Henderson but Mssr Poirot. I obviously started by looking at Ireland, they’ve had one of their two qualifiers where The Bosses Oscar showed perhaps too much when finishing 2nd to Dandy Mag - https://www.racingpost.com/results/187/leopardstown/2020-12-28/774928 The issue for TBO is two fold, the handicapper saw it, and so did the bookmakers. He’s 7/1 best priced and up at least 5lbs for the final. He is unexposed and he comes from the right connections but for me I see something more left field winning this. For the same reason I’ve got to go against Imperial Alcazar who won a qualifier at Warwick. He is classy and will win nice races, but he again is up in the handicap and down in price. I then took a forward look, with racing potentially on at Exeter this weekend we might see a qualifier. In that qualifier one horse stands out by about a mile - Palmer’s Hill - a JP horse (tick), with course winning form (tick) with untapped potential (tick) and a trainer who knows how to get a horse qualified (tick). This horse ran an interesting race on chase debut, hitting as many fences as he could whilst showing that the engine is still in the unit. He has untapped potential as a staying horse, having won over 2 1/2 and showing his best work in the finish. His mark of 137 is a borderline one, so a good run in 2nd or 3rd would be helpful, and then 4 and a bit weeks to tune him up and unleash him at the festival.
Wolverhampton 18.15 Revolutionise is the positive market mover and only has 1lb to find on Tranchee on Timeform ratings so obviously holds a strong chance. But Tranchee is an improved horse on the AW, also a C&D winner, won well last time out and trainer is in form. So I will go against the market mover and stand with Tranchee, available at 5/4 in places
Treaty Of Dingle EW in the first. The step up in trip after a couple runs out is definitely a positive but it would probably appreciate a couple more furlongs again. Trainer has a good record in these claimers and I fancy it to be there or thereabouts.
I am going with the third in the market, the front running Lord Of The Lodge. Having a back to lay and a 3 place bet. Good luck anyone playing tonight!!
Michael takes two up there tonight, one in each division of this handicap. The yard went 113 runners without a winner until the last week when they have had two so maybe a corner has been turned. I was looking at the race last night as I think the favourite makes the market. I was looking to back Michaels but he has never won beyond 6f so I reluctantly passed him over. I thought Choosey (drifter) looked to have an obvious chance but under the guidance of our resident sandrat expert I backed ELZAAMS DREAM for small stakes EW 4 places @ 20/1, now a good deal shorter with a small R4 to come.
