No doubt people said that about Pickford before he broke through.

Depends on the wages, the competition in their position and what the club needed to bring in. Even without a wages cap then club finances were going to be very stretched due to lack of crowd revenues.

Ben Alnwick at 35 is without a club and I would rather we had him on the bench than see Matthews make the first team squad ever again!

Anyone know why that goal they scored was disallowed btw? Forgot about that. Could and should have been even more embarrassing. We got off lightly imo.

Mention was made that the linesman flagged for offside, appears we got away with it that time but 2-1 or 3-1 makes little difference as we need to be winning games, draws are little use to us now, the club is riddled slow complacent players who are enjoying the moment, its up to the manager to suss them out, I thought LJ would , I don't anymore , he is clueless.

Offside, their player stuck his foot out just before it went through Matthews’ legs.

    Yeah.
I meant end of April. :emoticon-0111-blush
If we can just stop giving away stupid goals and start scoring some of the good chances we create.
Is that too much to ask?

Pickford was ready for the first team though, Patterson has hardly played in any cup games so it’d be a big step for him and playing with that shower in front of him won’t help his confidence or development when he’s shipping goals.

once again people calling for leadbitter to be dropped, we did start a game recently without him and were rubbish, picked up when he was brought on, power as well yet i actually think he had a decent game tonight with some good passing.

i have no idea why we cannot get a break going, the amount of times i see the midfield/defence with the ball and a man out wide, ahead of them and unmarked yet they turn inside and lose the momentum...play the ball wide and in front of them to give them a run at the defenders, it aint rocket science is it and this HAS to come down to the coaching they are getting, it should be 2nd nature to spot a pass and get moving, then we have mcgeady, whilst a lot of our better play goes through him, he also has a habit of wanting to get a shot in when a pass is on or wanting to twist and turn, delaying a ball into the box...i don't think there is a single player we can say is consistent, they never know what each other are going to do so are never 'ready' to recieve the ball and those pauses cost us.

The same Pickford who had been playing at Darlo, Bradford, Preston and a few other clubs getting rave reviews before playing for us you mean?

Don’t think he’s saying anybody has said it - think he’s jokingly trying to convince himself of it

We're about the same level as Darlo these days.....
Someone has edited Remi Matthews wiki page, gave me a good laugh amidst the misery.......

"In 2020 he joined Sunderland AFC as head of dropping free kicks into the back of the net"

We were a premiership club in those days, so the comparisons are irrelevant. But Patterson does remind me of Pickford at the same age, and under present circumstances I would have him on the bench and start either Burge or Mathews, in fact just before they scored the second I was hoping LJ would send Burge on as it was clear that the first goal had affected the keeper, it was a very similar situation a game or two back against Hull. Goal keeping is more than any other position all about confidence and if we are to save this season the only confident keeper I see at the club atm is Patterson, and no I am not his dad, and I appreciate we could destroy the lad by putting him in now, but it could also be the making of him who knows. The alternative and I understand its a difficult choice is to see us have another season in L1 and if that is the case so be it. I'm not adverse to it, as I quite enjoy this league we are at least not getting regular televised hammerings and fighting relegation season after season as we were a year or two ago.

Mostly because we should have two better keepers above him but we haven't.

David de Gea came off the bench for Athletico Madrid in the Champions League when he was 18 years old. Pepe Reina played for Barcelona in the Champions League when he was 19 and, due to injuries, he also played about half of their La Liga games that season too!

If you are good enough you are good enough - irrespective of age!

Dont be puzzled mate. I didnt say anybody on here had,. Its me and my humour and my sentiments about that cup.

If you look over the road there are plenty of SAFC fans that say it

I know opinions will differ which is fair enough

If you want a direct comparison then Patterson would only have had to have been doing well for non league sides, we're an average league one side not a premier league team and all we need is a competent keeper for this level. We don't need someone who can take us to the prem we just need a keeper who isn't terrified of playing football.
