Reading the live reporting from the trial, if I was on that jury, it would be a guilty verdict for the rape and the murder of Libby. Disgusting excuse of a man
Justice Lambert has told the jury it has occurred to her manslaughter is an option for the verdict but it has not been explained. She said: “There is no count of manslaughter on the indictment but it can be returned as an alternative verdict to murder. “That would arise if you were sure Pawel Relowicz assaulted Libby Squire and it caused her death in the sense it made one or more contributions to her death and whether he intended it to. "If the answer is no, the verdict will be not guilty of murder but you should consider whether that person intended to cause some harm and then if you are sure of that you will return a guilty verdict of manslaughter."
it sounds like they don't have a strong enough case to prove him guilty of the crime accused beyond reasonable doubt
I think we're saying the same thing, but the judge is offering an alternative to 'not guilty' that still lets her lock him up for life.
There's also the rape charge, there is a strong enough case for rape and manslaughter, intent to murder seems uncertain?
It’s a very compelling summary by the defence. They might convict him but I think it will get over turned on appeal if they do.
It's a very emotive case - the prime suspect is an absolute sex pest and a danger to women, and for that alone he should be locked away for a long time, but a murderer? The evidence to say he's a murderer is flimsy at best - beyond reasonable doubt? Don't think so.
Innocent until proven guilty and all that but it must be beyond reasonable doubt that he was majorly instrumental in her death. I don't really mind what he's found guilty/not guilty for as long as he's put away for a long, long time. I just hope whatever happens it gives her family chance of finding some sort of peace.
Yea. Unfortunately the way Libby was has given a very good defence for him that the lawyer has driven to the max
I'd lock him away forever just for those previous crimes. What use is he to society, behaving like that?
It’s really bizarre isn’t it. And to make it worse he’s the father of two children. Married and works as well. an unusual mixture.
He was responsible for Libby's death, which is where the manslaughter option comes in. How she ended up in the water, either dead or alive may never be known, as may not his intentions. However, his actions undoubtedly caused her death and to me that is as much murder as, say, murder by association, where a gang member can be convicted of murder because they where present even though they didn't actually kill someone. He caused her to die. Therefore he should be convicted of murder.
Hopefully the jury have evidence that has not been reported that will help make them the 'correct' decision even if manslaughter with a long tariff, with his other conviction he may be classed as 'dangerous' (I can't remember the technical legal term) & only released at the end of his sentence when deemed 'safe'
When it all dies down I wonder if any questions will be asked why he wasn't picked up earlier, before Libby Squires went missing, because it reads as though he was a one man crime wave in a very small area of the city, yet no alarm bells rung, no investigation, no reports of even anything going on. I have daughters and grand daughters in that area and I shudder to think how close they have been to coming across this perverted bastard whilst walking home down that very road where Libby was last seen alive. Imagine if he hadn't come across Libby that night, would he still be ****ing himself off in the street, breaking into houses and peering through peoples windows with his cock in his hand and no-one would be any the wiser ?
Hope he gets at least man slaughter. Poor girls last night on a freezing cold one at that coming across a sex pest who by self admission was out looking for someone. She can’t of known what she was doing. He certainly did. My daughter. Your daughter. Someone’s daughter for sure. Can’t be proved but he certainly influenced the outcome with his behaviour. As the thread says...RIP Libby.
