A minor triumph for an old man yesterday. We were watching Richard Osman's House of Games and one of the questions, which the contestants were invited to guess at, was 'How many different 5-card hands can be made from standard 52-card pack of playing cards'. The guesses were ridiculously low (in the low thousands), so I offered up the opinion that the actual answer would be in the millions. This was met with some scepticism from my family, so I said that I knew how to work it out (remembering my Pure Maths with Statistics 'A' level). The programme was paused while I did the calculation on my phone...

    52*51*50*49*48 / 5*4*3*2*1 = 2,598,560.

When the programme was restarted Osman revealed that I was spot on.

A high-five from my son and admiring amazement from my wife and daughter.

I began to find them really distracting. Seems to be a fair bit of on line comment as well, particularly regarding unnatural evenness and incredible, sun like, brightness. I’ll get my shades on for the next episode.

    The Umbrella Academy, on Netflix.

Recommended to me by a friend, I've binged two seasons of this in no time at all. It's a dark comedy with a bit of sci-fi and superhero chucked in.

October 1st 1989, 43 women who were not pregnant gave birth. Seven of these children are adopted/bought by an eccentric billionaire who brings them up with a view to saving the world. They all show signs of super powers, and thwart several criminal capers as kids. Years later, on the death of their adoptive-father, the estranged siblings re-unite and discover the apocalypse is only days away - and attempt to save the world. Not everything goes to plan....

Don't want to spoil anything, but season two is even better!

The original comics were written by Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance, and the series has a killer soundtrack ranging from Bay City Rollers to Radiohead and everything inbetween.

I've really enjoyed it, and if you're looking for something light-hearted that will appeal to a range of ages, give this a go.

No idea, they don't get mentioned after about 2 minutes of the first episode! Suppose there is scope for them to become involved in later series though

Starting on Thursday night on Sky Atlantic, can't recommend this program enough. Caught it on a stream last year and it's superb. If you've seen the Gomorrah series, then you'll know roughly what to expect, but this is an international affair across three continents which takes it to another level. The cinematography is something to behold, and a glorious, atmospheric soundtrack by Mogwai

    ZeroZeroZero

Roberto Saviano’s 2013 non-fiction book on the international cocaine trade gets the dramatic treatment in this eight-part series, following a shipment of drugs from the Mexican cartel to the Italian mafia, via a brokering family in New Orleans. As soldiers begin to close in on the cartel, a power struggle is initiated with wide-reaching consequences.
Thursday 4 February, 9pm, Sky Atlantic

Latest episode of American Gods had no relation to the original book whatsoever, and consequently didn’t drive the story forward much, but was fun nevertheless, particularly a psychotic overweight Marilyn Manson, and a demented Mr Wednesday stripping off and playing with the traffic after being involved in an explosion. But best, the return of Crispin Glover as Mr World, God of Globalisation. This bloke was born to play weird.

Oh dear, Marilyn Manson now the subject of some pretty horrific abuse accusations by his former girlfriend, Rachel Evan Wood.

This is hardly important in the overall context, but my enjoyment of American Gods will undoubtedly be reduced if he has much more screen time. I am one of those unable to divorce the real life actions and opinions of artists from their creations/performances.

Was gonna mention that to you. I’m same as you....I used to like ‘soldier, soldier’ but ever since I had the misfortune of meeting one of the main characters and seeing what an absolute **** he is.....I can’t watch it anymore.

Yep. Kevin Spacey is/was a great actor, especially in sinister and creepy roles, but I can’t watch any of his stuff now.

Comedians are the worse.....I can name two who I thought were really funny......and then I met them in real life and were absolute cocks.
On the other hand........Bill Bailey and Noel Fielding were amazingly funny and very friendly.

Rory McGrath was a total bellend......I used to really like him on ‘I think it’s all Over’
Dave Gorman is a miserable twat who wouldn't even give us a smile
And as for the other actor.......he goes fishing a lot.

Yeah, I can imagine McGrath being a twat. Hasn’t he disappeared because of me too issues? Not really familiar with Gorman.

Robson Green eh? That’s a shame I am genetically hardwired to like Geordies. I refuse it to believe it could be Whitehouse (who my brother has met and liked) or the saintly Bob Mortimer.

Yep you got it.......a vile man who went out of his way to be horrible and nasty to everyone. Couldn’t stand him.
He was nothing like his jolly personality that you see on TV.
One person who was nothing like his TV personality, in a good way, was Gordon Ramsey......a really nice guy who was always willing to have a chat.

To my relief Manson has been excised from the one remaining episode of American Gods that he was in.

As his character wasn’t in the original book which is still the core of the story, I don’t think this will make any difference to the series. Good move.
