Where's our customary 1-0 win again Middlesbrough. (Five in a row, isn't it?)

    Could have been worse.
Take the point and move on
Worrying point, but 2 games with no shots on target

Well they 'did a job on us' as did Barnsley. That result was dismissed as we did have a very much changed side, but this result seems to show that the high press game works on us. Hope DF can sort this out. Not a crisis, but it shows that disappointment is just round the corner.

A worrying time to look out of form, but I can think of some plusses.

Our defence really does look more solid nowadays. In the old days, we would have lost a match like that due to a stupid mistake. The Greek guy seems to have bedded in OK, and players coming back from a long injury are playing themselves back into contention.

And Warnock really is very good at spoiling matches against good teams. His problems come against teams like Rotherham, when his side is required to do something positive.

    So you're the jinx.

Considering that we have won 16 games out of 26 this season, two draws and a defeat is pretty impressive!

Boro defended well, but our attacking players had an off day. Boro's 3 shots on target were tame efforts Krul handled easily. Need to win at Millwall and at least a draw at Swansea to keep the momentum going.

Howson was the best player today.

Jonny scored 6.7 on WhoScored while Hanley was MotM with 7.7 points, which he well deserved IMO. Giannoulis was next highest on 7.3 and Gibson was 7.1 in a solid defensive display which seems to get better every week.

Do you know I actually thought it wasn’t so much the high press today as a tactical press.

The commentators, rightly, pointed out that they marked Cantwell out of the game. Buendia also was closed down quickly.

So it was so much pressing everywhere as really strangling our creativity.

I thought Rupp looked a bit rusty going forward and Skipp just doesn’t offer the same passing range from depth as McLean.

Giannoulis had his moments of sparks, but I also thought (understandably) his role was a bit disjointed so our left hand side didn’t click quite as well.

Same issues we have had all season: we have to stay patient round the 60-80 minute mark. I don’t know why we aren’t learning. Even in the final 10 minutes down a man we had a couple of chances.

Sadly, brilliant as Buendia is, he let it get to him - but to be fair we were starting to look frustrated across the pitch. And it was two soft yellows, though on balance probably right.

So it ended up being a good point against a top half team playing exceptionally well, with us having an off-day and playing a decent chunk of the match down a man. We go again.

Hanley was excellent - unfortunately he made a mistake early on and then that glaring shin swipe in the second half that put Howson through on goal.

Without wanting to start another bun-fight, if he could minimise those really obvious horror shows, I think he will start to look like a proper Premier League player. Interesting that the interview with him the other day he said how much he’d improved under Farke.

Yep 2 mistakes in 90 minutes. Buendia made 2 mistakes and got sent off. Who cost us more ?
Very few if any of our players made less than 2 mistakes in the game.

Hanley has improved greatly this season and looks far more comfortable playing the ball out of defence. The two mistakes came out of a lot of work he had to do and don't take away from his commanding presence in our penalty area. Gibson is providing an excellent partner and their understanding makes the whole defence much tighter. We never looked likely to concede from set pieces today and that is another major improvement. Giannoulis was also excellent considering how few training days he's had and being thrown in at the deep end.

It’s a good point you make Rick - while obviously the result is disappointing, and the performance wasn’t up to scratch, I really never felt like we were going to concede other than through a random but of brilliance or luck. Even when we lost Buendia.
