I was wondering why the team decided to do that

I think it's pretty clear that Renaults best chance of a good result is Senna. but as to the why's who knows, they may have flipped a coin.

...would mean putting one of the drivers potentially at risk (in terms of performance)

Renault said the tighter package that Senna is using retains more heat and so doesn't suit Petrov's driving style as he uses more engine braking on downshift which in turn uses more engine revs, and this would cause the car to over heat in Petrov's hands.

Senna was also the Test driver originaly for Renault right? so wouldnt it be better for him to evaluate? Renault have nothing more or less to achieve now so what does it matter

They consider him to give better feedback, they only have one, he used to work as a test driver, they secretly hate Petrov...
Any one of a number of reasons.

Testing of new parts almost always begins on one car! Surely the reason is obvious? Something's being tested!!

I only said that is what Renault said, I didn't say I believed it. their cars have a tendency to explode onto marshals legs so god knows why they would want to make them even more heat sensitive.
