I think part of the issue for teachers, are the reports from some teachers unions, that are unhelpful, as they are recognised as being flawed, and there is plenty of other more robust information that should help reassure them. It seems applying common sense measures to individual situations, as happens in other workplaces will make it even safer. Teachers were not at significantly higher risk of death from Covid-19 than the general population, Office for National Statistics figures suggest. Restaurant staff, people working in factories and care workers had among the highest death rates, followed by taxi drivers and security guards. Nurses were more than twice as likely as their peers to die of coronavirus. Secondary school teachers may have been at slightly, but not measurably, higher risk than the average. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55795608
Primary schools can safely reopen after half-term if cases keep falling, government health advisers have concluded. Leading paediatricians warn in a letter toThe Times today of the “calamitous” impact of closures and say that “anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicidal thoughts are at frightening levels.” PHE has been monitoring infections in schools by looking at age data in all confirmed cases, studying outbreaks of two or more cases in quick succession and carrying out random sampling with both swab and antibody tests. Data from the autumn term clearly finds that younger children are much less likely to pick up and spread the virus. “There’s a strong case for primary schools to reopen once infection rates start falling and are sufficiently low to allow easing of national lockdown measures,” Dr Ladhani said. “The evidence is building to show is that primaries are a safe environment.” Wes Streeting, the shadow schools minister, said: “Boris Johnson must guarantee that schools and colleges will be first to reopen.” https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/coronavirus-primary-schools-safe-to-open-soon-m9gv7jrhs

Wasn’t the government guidance to use Oak Academy/BBC Bitesize where possible and to only mark one piece of work per child per week? Or has that now changed? Obviously, as schools, we’re having to do more than that because engagement will just drop off a cliff.
Bang out of order!!! It may have escaped your attention but Chazz missed out on a significant period of last year....The man had Covid FFS...
Install them in Hull and folk would think they were for washing your feet without having to do a balancing act to wash them in the sink.
I actually prefer the Eva Cassidy one though of course it is more closely associated with Sandy Denny by most people. As you say a lovely song.
Largely I agree. I think the problem with one national position from any group (a Union saying they should close or the Govt saying they should open) it fails to recognise local arrangements and the physical layout of each school. As an extreme example if a school was running with plenty of space, and were able to ensure social distancing etc then they should be safe to be open If they don’t and can’t, then they’re less likely to be safe Either way while I am a committed trades unionist they do need to be cautious their great work doesn’t get undermined by being too general and leaving themselves open to being easily challenged. They should absolutely support school staff if their working arrangements aren’t safe though
I would agree with that, and add that the teachers themselves should also be in a position to apply common sense solutions to their specific situations, as most others have to do. Too much looks politically based, rather than a pragmatic input to improve the situation.
Had some bad news from a friend today. Her Mother went into HRI with non Covid ailment and sadly caught it while there. She was transferred to Castle Hill but sadly died. My friend couldn't talk today because she was in bits. R.I.P.
