I do not see why you don’t think McClean can be a Premier League midfielder, but we’ve already gone through this sort of thing regarding Hanley so I don’t propose to start again.

I would be very happy starting next season (if, touch wood, we get promoted) in the premier league with McClean and Sorensen playing as joint DMs, and would consider that an upgrade on last season where we started with Trybull and McClean (loss v Liverpool), Trybull and Leitner (win v Newcastle and losses v West Ham and Chelsea), McClean and Tettey (win v Man City and loss v Burnley), McClean and Leitner (losses v Palace and Villa, draw v Bournemouth), you get the idea...

Interestingly, of the matches we picked points in the PL, McClean started all of them except the win against Newcastle and the 2-2 draw with Tottenham. Guess how many other players won as many (or more) points for Norwich as starters in the Premier League last season?

Most importantly, TWO of them would have to do it.

I think I'm right in saying that, because they play each other, when they catch up with us in terms of games played, we will be at least six points clear of third place.

    1) Swansea beat Brentford. Swans go 4 points behind, Bees stay 9 points. If Bees win their other game in hand, still 6 points behind in third.

    2) Swans and Bees draw. Swans go 6 points behind, Bees move to 5 points behind if they win their other game in hand.

    3) Bees beat Swans. Swans stay in third, seven points behind us. Bees moves to 3 points behind if they win their other game in hand.

So, unless I've screwed up somewhere in my calculations, the third club will always be 6 or 7 points behind.

I know, I have too much time on my hands <laugh>

That will always be the case, but as we can't throw money at a load of new players we have to hope that experienced partnerships can make the difference. It will be interesting who plays in the middle when Sørensen is no longer needed at LB and Rupp has returned to fitness.

Only because you've stopped posting questions on the Stats thread ;) Something about goalkeepers?

He's flagging to Quintilla and Giannoulis that they need to prove themselves if they want that slot.

I originally replied because I thought maybe people would want to discuss the pros and cons of using stats, but it's become clear that they don't. In fact, the thread seems to annoy a lot of people, and I don't want to piss off my fellow not606s, (there are few enough of us already without causing more friction), so I've decided not to post again.

I wouldn't worry about that Lisbon. You're not going to "piss anyone off". If you want to discuss something statty, then go for it. That's the whole point of having a separate thread for it. I'm a fan of the broader stats too but I'm afraid I start to glaze over when we get down into the deeper detail.

I like to dip into the stats thread for new things I may not have seen. Stats are only a part of the whole picture though and shouldn't undermine the passion of the game.

How on earth can stats "undermine the passion of the game"? Have you ever watched or been at a game in the NBA?

For some people they do, for others they don’t. It’s a personal preference isn’t it.

Yes I have, given that I grew up in America and came here when I was 24. The NFL and MLB, which I still follow, are even more stats oriented but the sports are different, as they stop and start more than football does and even basketball has frequent time outs. I'd get a bit annoyed if football commentators were constantly going on about xG and xGa during a match the way baseball commentators do about rbi (runs batted in for non baseball fans).

After the match xG and xGa have a place for those who are interested and that's fine, but they are subject to judgements about the 'expected' goal chances, unlike a player's rbi which is factual, much like the number of goals a football player has scored. After any game, detailed stats can give another insight into why a game was won or lost. That's why I like looking through the WhoScored analysis after the match to get a more objective view about how each player has done and xG and xGa analysis can be a part of that as well, as can other detailed stats. For me though, just not during action of a football game.

I asked you about the NBA , Rick, precisely because, as you say, it's the world's top league in the "most stats oriented" game in the world and I've never heard anyone involved in or with the NBA (or basketball generally or the NFL for that matter), fans, players, coaches, franchise owners, media people or whoever, say that being so stats orientated has "undermined the passion of the game". And with respect, nothing you've said in reply supports anything of the kind.
Is there any evidence that football managers and coaches, football analysts, the guys who founded and run Opta and similar companies, indeed anyone deeply immersed in the use, development and provision of football stats, are any the less passionate about the game compared to those who neither know nor care one whit about stats? I'm sure it would come as a shock to DF to have his "passion for the game" questioned!

I don't want another prolonged argument Robbie, but there's a difference in US sports because they have frequent breaks in play and frequent player changes which requires a different sort of commentary. In basketball you need to know how many fouls a player has committed (like who's on a yellow card in football) because of the risk of being sent off. What I don't want is an increase in stats during football games distracting attention while play is active. At half-time or after the game stats are useful in analysing what has happened overall and whether that's a 'passionate' thing depends on the individual. For me it's a 'dispassionate' process which provides useful information. During the game, I am far more passionate and the stats can wait.

We should anyway be on the Stats thread -- except that it's apparently been killed off by the forces of darkness.
Last question: are you saying your enjoyment of McLean's shot and Bentley's save on Wednesday would be lessened if you allowed yourself to think about xG during the game?

I'd rather think of it as a good shot, good save and leave the xG and xGa analysis to after the game.

When has anyone on this forum said that stats do not play an important part in modern day football management ? A truly ridiculous statement to make, even by your standards.

I was giving some thought as to why today's game doesn't interest me enough to listen to it or really bother about who is playing, apart from generally hoping that we don't put out our best players and get injuries. I decided that it's because the FA Cup is pretty much a stat free area.
