It’s like Smug alluded to, if we can play like we did down at Lincoln and maintain that level, we could get out of it, LJ just needs to find the right formula and with a couple of additions we will climb, just need to give the bloke a chance and a little patience, then judge him at the end of the season.
And yet Wyke has the 3rd best goal tally in the league and Burge the 3rd best clean sheet percentage. Makes you wonder where we would be in the table without them both.
I think if it had been sorted and announced there would have been more transfer activity. I’m not saying we would be signing big name players or anything but I think a couple might have left and at least one more through the door[/QUOTE] Club have been saying for a while they're close to the salary cap, Outgoings first imo.
Most important players on the pitch ,the keeper and the strikers We need new players in these positions
So he’s had 2 howlers all season, which keeper hasn’t? He doesn’t shout loud enough? But he’s kept 9 clean sheets in 17 games, he’s the best first choice keeper in league one statistically. Best get rid then. How about Lee Camp back from the championship or Steele back from the premier league?
Under SD we'd be lower because he'd replace them with worse. Under KLDs gang tho (if they'd have got here earlier!), we'd have replaced them with better and be higher. O&U!
Credit to the defence for the clean sheets because Burge isn't a good keeper for this level. If he was confident he'd be fine but he's got the demeanour of a whipped dog and it affects morale. McLaughlin was twice the keeper despite his poor distribution, we need someone of his calibre.
You have absolutely no way of knowing if Burge going about his business quietly and diligently is affecting the teams morale. Imagine the back four at the end of a match with their heads down thinking “ that was ****e, yet another clean sheet and we never heard a peep out of Lee “ I know this place is a form of soshal meeja but you must know that just because you think of something in your head that has no factual basis, it doesn’t become true because you’ve posted it. Fake news mate.
I think you'll find it's very well known common knowledge that a keeper who lacks confidence affects the defence negatively and conversely a loud and confident keeper, or any player really, is a good thing to have. Fair enough you apparently don't think he's lacking in confidence, I have thought that about him almost every game I've seen him.
Burge isnt great imo, Mathews is awful and worries the **** out of me every time he plays. As you say, confidence is massive for keepers, a loud and confident Pickford is unreal compared to a loud and unconfident Pickford. Looking back at the top keepers, schmeichael (sp), neuer, buffon (admittedly at a totally different level) they all have arrogance/confidence. Essential attribute for a keeper imo.
I was thinking about this earlier. Wondering if we actually have different problems to the ones that seem apparent. For example most, myself included, would say we need pace and creativity up front but we have guile and trickery in McGeady, goals in Wyke and pace in Diamond as well as Gooch. We don’t let many in so perhaps keeper and defence arent the problem. I’m increasingly thinking it’s our pedestrian and less than physically imposing midfield that’s the biggest problem. I’m not suggesting we don’t need a better striker or keeper, we do and should always look to improve in every position but I’m certainly beginning to think any investment this season would be better spent on quality midfield options.
Don't have to look very far back for an example of that, couple of weeks ago: "With only five minutes gone there was a long delay as Burge needed treatment after being caught in the face by Mallik Wilks’ boot, after the keeper had dived at the forward’s feet to make a save. And almost as soon as play restarted, Burge made the mistake which gifted the Tigers the lead on 13 minutes. Former Sunderland skipper George Honeyman’s free-kick from the right flank should have been an easy take for Burge, but the ball bounced off his chest and Burke was there to fire home the loose ball from close range. That goal rattled Sunderland somewhat and they had a couple of close shaves as Hull poured forward."
