:emoticon-0126-nerd: The latest brainwave from the Department of Health:

A £500 payment to anybody who tests positive for Coronavirus <doh>

If I was a young, healthy (but brassic) person who has about a 1% chance of suffering bad symptoms from COVID19 but a 100% chance of pocketing £500 if I contract it, what am I going to be tempted to do?
Not follow the bleeding rules, that's for sure.
In fact I'm going to be severely tempted to actively go out and try to catch the virus.

Fortunately this is only a proposal. I can't believe it will be approved.

Getting a bit tired of hearing manufactured criticism of the roll-out of the vaccine.

    On the BBC this morning, something like this;
Over 90% of over 80's in Northumbria vaccinated
Only 50% of over 80's in London vaccinated
the implication being there is something badly wrong with the vaccination process in London.

What they don't say is that there is probably 50 times the number of over 80's in London as there are in Northumbria.
Presenting percentage figures without absolute numbers makes the comparison meaningless.
Certainly not worth getting all upset about.

Stats can be misleading and not tell the whole story.
    This being a prime example.

We've had a plague of politicians jumping the queue for a vaccination here inSpain. One has (finally) resigned while others are mouthing feeble excuses about how they were assured they were correct to do it. But as the cases rise here, and the health services are pushed to the brink, it's sickening to see a buch of people who could easily work from home showing how unfit they are for public office.
And an apology to the Catalan nationalists. The Catalan elections due on Feb 14th, were due to be suspended until may due to health worries due to covid, but it was the Madrid government, not the nationalists, who issued a legal block to make it happen as scheduled, and to hell with the pandemic. Given the problems with infection rates, telling people to group together to vote right now seems beyond stupid, but the Spanish government have consistently been slow to react, so it seems fair they get the credit for another gaffe.

It's a difficult issue, the situation that Democracy can also be a victim of Coronavius.

In London, Sadiq Khan will have been Mayor for a whole year longer than his term by this summer, because elections were deemed unsafe due to COVID19.

But in the USA Donald Trump's attempts to delay the November 2020 Presidential Election because of Coronavirus never had any credibility.
(mostly because he showed nothing but contempt and complacency towards the Pandemic the rest of the time, I expect).
Thank God the US Election did go ahead.
The notion of Trump as President with no time limit on his term in office is a truly chilling one.

I acknowledge that President of the USA is an infinitely more important job than Mayor of London.
    But as the Emperor in the Star Wars movies once said;
"All those who gain power are afraid to lose it".

All true. But my understanding is that most civic type virus tend to back down in the summer. Thst gives a pretty big window to hold elections. I don't know why the mayoral elections are so late - a year is a longtime. But nowvwould be a bad time.

I had my first jab yesterday. I asked the doctor why I was getting it while half the over-80's still hadn't. She didn't know how they worked it out, but thought they were just trying to get as many done as quickly as possible. I only got the text at 9pm the previous evening. Maybe they received a batch of Pfizer, and had to use it up pronto.

My good lady works at a medical centre and indeed they do ring round and text people to fill gaps in if they should occur - very good idea imo

We are still 14 days away from our first vaccination. Other towns in the area have started but not all.

22nd Jan update: Tables updated at the top of page 1

The UK continues to be worst affected of all European countries.
Things are still bad in Germany too.
Infection rates have risen sharply in Spain & Portugal over the last two weeks.

The PM announced today as well that preliminary data shows the new variant of Coronavirus (the home-grown variant) is slightly more deadly than the original virus.
Mortality rate of about 13 per 1,000 infected (on average) rather than about 10 per 1,000 for the original virus.
That is only about 0.3% more, but it is still depressing to see.

Boris did say though that there is no evidence the new variant is more resistant to any of our vaccines.

In China, Thailand and Philippines they have had the rule that everyopne entering the country has to isolate in a hotel for 14 days, at the traveller's expense, before being free to continue to final destination. Philippines and Thailand have had few cases by restricting unnecessary travel.

My friend in Philippines has had only one case in her province, a long-distance lorry driver who drives to and from Manila and brought the infection back. His family was isolated and all are now OK. China is on the increase in certain areas and I will ask my friends there this coming week why that is happening. Wuhan, the original epicentre, its totally back to normal.

My friend in Thailand, also a pub landlord, has been shut down in the last week., She tells me that it is because people were starting to visit Thailand again and the airport regulations had been slackened. They are now back to quarantine for all incomers.

I have mentioned before the steps taken by Taiwan, and their cases have been unbelievably low.

Our Government has been afraid to upset big business interests (airlines etc) or vocal minorities and has therefore been weak in the extreme. This could and should have been managed and contained with the vaccine as a backup for the most vulnerable in our society.
