English manager for the England side or just the best man for the job?

With International weekend again, let’s turn our attention to the national side for a moment.

Age old question but always worth a debate anyway eh?

Should the national England football team have an Englishman as its manager, or do you subscribe to the theory that you should simply have the best man for the job regardless of nationality?

Personally, I want an English manager every time and simply cannot agree that there isn’t one we could employ over a foreign coach. I am 100% with Jamie Carragher on this one and I am relieved that some senior players are now coming out and saying it so openly.

I don’t see what Cappello has done any better than say what Harry Rednapp, Roy Hodgson, or Alan Curbishley would have achieved. Our showing in the World Cup last year was a disgrace and an embarrassment imo.

I think Rednapp is the outstanding candidate for the job personally and although he is a complete dodgy ****er off the pitch, on it he would instill that 'English Spirit' and national pride in the shirt and his style of football is far superior and entertaining to Capello's vision.

I'd like to see Beckham and maybe even Shearer involved more in the national team and a long term successor from either of these two emerge in 4 years time. Lots of big nations - Holland, Germany to name 2 - have employed young coaches with little or no club football management experience as it’s not as important at international level imo but with loads of charisma and respect. What is required is an inspirational figurehead and some good backroom people around them.

The best 11 players of a national team do not require to be told how to play and I think that Cappello over complicates the system and the players. Someone like Beckham would just pick good players and tell them to express and enjoy themselves and would have universal fans support. Instead of appointing boring lame ducks, I would like to see DB given the next 2 years or so alongside Rednapp and be groomed for the big job for the WC of 2018.

    Discuss.

Interesting read. Personally I don't think it matters one jot.

I am convinced the FA poke their beaks in

    & interfere too much.

England managers have continually stuck with the old guard of players who are no longer doing it for their country or, in fact never were.

John Barnes, Carlton Palmer, Steve McManaman etc, etc.

As you say the performance in South Africa was a disgrace yet England are relatively lucky in the groups they are drawn in.

Wayne Rooney's comments about the fans appaled me TBH, no idea what some of those people did or gave up to go over there to watch a bunch of overpaid ****e hawks.

I honestly don't think it will make any difference as the FA is an old boys network & until we remove that quango we will continue to fail.

TBH, I'm past caring about the England team, overpaid & overated.

Just not as good as they think they are.

Never has an English manager won the premier league.

Only a Frog, two Jocks & a Portugeezer.

    Anyone I've missed?

England are just not good enough.

Well I used to care an awful lot about the England team, but after South Africa I have lost a little fervour.
I have been on hols and have not been to my favourite real ale boozer for a few weeks and I will probably go there have a few pints and chat with the guys instead. The lot that play with the egg shaped ball are playing in the morning and I think I am looking forward more to that than Rooney and co. tonight.

As to who should manage them, Capello I cannot stand nor flash Harry and currently I cannot see any other English manager has the experience like SirBR who had a wealth of managing clubs all round Europe when he became England manager, we just do not have anybody like that currently . Arsene Wenger rather than the red nose scotsman is the manager I would like to see manage England, he is almost an honorary Englishman anyhow.

Jose Mourinho should do it along with Stuart Pearce as his assistant.

No Englishman has the credentials... Simple as.

Foreign, I'd be looking at Wenger, Hiddink, Mourinho and the like.

Anyone who's good, even an English manager would give up the job at a drop of a hat if someone offered more money.

I agree. Nationality is irrelevant, so it's the best man available for me. Any of the above would do very nicely....

I don't believe you need a lot of experience to manage England. A lot of other countries have young upcoming managers. I really believe Beckham will be manager very shortly.

    English maager.
Capello & Ericcson got us no further in the major tournaments than Robbo or Venners.

Just the best man for the job, but it would be great if that meant he was English...
