Democrats forge ahead to impeach Trump, again

US Democrats said they would push to remove President Donald Trump from office during the final days of his administration after his supporters' violent attack on the Capitol, with some Republicans supporting the move.

US lawmakers have formally introduced a charge of impeachment against US President Donald Trump.

Trump faces a single charge - "incitement of insurrection" - over the deadly riot at the US Capitol, according to a draft of the articles obtained by The Associated Press.

Lawmakers were set to vote mid-week.

Earlier, a House resolution calling on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke constitutional authority to remove Trump from office was blocked by Republicans.

The four-page impeachment bill draws from Trump's own false statements about his election defeat to Democrat Joe Biden; his pressure on state officials in Georgia to "find" him more votes; and his White House rally ahead of the Capitol siege, in which he encouraged thousands of supporters to "fight like hell" before they stormed the building on Wednesday (local time).

A violent and largely white mob of Trump supporters overpowered police, broke through security lines and windows and rampaged through the Capitol, forcing lawmakers to scatter as they were finalising Biden's victory over Trump in the Electoral College.

Happy birthday to the Income Tax, introduced today in 1799 by Pitt the Younger as a “temporary war measure”.

Parliament needs a massive shake-up, with fewer bankers and more key workers fighting for ordinary people.

This story is incorrect - misleading speculation from anonymous EU sources. The UK pushed for a more ambitious agreement with the EU on the temporary movement of business travellers, which would have covered musicians and others, but our proposals were rejected by the EU.

    Mmm - who to believe.....

The source went on to say that the UK refused to agree because 'they said they were ending free moment', adding that it was 'untrue' to say they asked for something more ambitious.

If she's anything like her boss, then wouldn't believe a word coming out of Dinenages' twitter account!

Capitol riots: FBI warnings amid fears of more pro-Trump violence

image captionSecurity has been stepped up at the US Capitol following deadly violence last week
The FBI is warning of the possibility of armed protests being held across the US in the days before Joe Biden is sworn in as president.

There are reports of armed groups planning to gather at all 50 state capitols and in Washington DC in the run-up to his 20 January inauguration.

The fears come as security plans are hardened for the event itself.

On Monday, Mr Biden told reporters he was not afraid to take the oath of office outside of the US Capitol.

Both he and Kamala Harris are still expected to be sworn in outside the building, only two weeks after it was the site of a deadly raid by radical supporters of President Donald Trump opposing the election result.

Security officials are resolute there will be no repeat of the breach seen on 6 January - when thousands of pro-Trump supporters were able to break into the grounds of the complex where members of Congress were voting to certify the election result.

I don't think Trump is going down with out a fight but I think the deep state will defeat him. He is trying to expose the corruptness of the MSM but everything is against him , we'll see.

I completely understand why they're going after Trump.
However, I'm not sure it's the way for Biden to start his term.
I agree that good people doing nothing can lead to terrible things, but these divisions in the States are becoming incredibly dangerous.

I'd be tempted to let Trump limp away and starve him of all publicity.

I really hope you are wrong on this Nines, but if your predictions on this are as good as on the return of Charlie Austin, this is very worrying.

I've seen reports that some of the few security officers who were supposed to be protecting Congress at the start of that invasion, were mostly occupied taking selfies of themselves with invaders, some of whom were in full military gear, and armed. If the emergency forces Trump has now authorised to protect the Country for the week around the inauguration include many like that, there could be huge problems.

Well done Rishi Sunak in giving the awful Anneliese Dodds a lesson in politics.<applause>
After the Droid came out with the old chestnut of 'Mixed messages' and how bad the 'Economy' was, he gave her telling off saying before you comment on the economy you need to get your facts right. He went on to explain how the economy works... she wasn't happy. <laugh>
Following that, he pulled her up on Labour's failed 'Mixed messages' slogan telling her it "Impacts confidence and peoples understandings". I laughed at her muted protestations. <laugh>
    Well done Rishi.
