It's designed to hamstring bigger clubs, "levelling the playing field" for smaller clubs, who know that they can't really compete with bigger clubs dropping into that level for long. The EFL and some of the smaller clubs like it, because they reckon it'll make the league more even and more competitive. But all it does is anchor teams down there, teams will struggle to get better quality players capable of playing at a higher level due to not being able to afford the wages, so will still stick with average league one types. Players capable of playing at a higher level will get picked off as sellable assets very quickly, but will probably only be replaced by journeymen, so over all squad quality will start to drop, resulting in a drop in standards in the league. That might make it "competitive" but if its poor standard less people will want to watch it, causing less TV interest which can damage TV rights deals. Due as well to the salary cap, you might find players heading abroad, or to Scotland or even dropping into the conference if the moneys better. The whole thing is a monumental mess up brought in to satisfy the envy and jealousy of some clubs by an organisation not fit for purpose.
Yes. But only if we do not challenge it. It was to be expected that Donald and the useless amateurs who have been running the club would not do so. I certainly hope this new guy does It's a pity he has to come into a situation such as this which is not of his own making
Its a must we get promoted this season otherwise it’ll cripple us next season. We would have to sign a new team on small wages.
We're the biggest club in L1 and the one with the most ambition and prospects. Any L2, L1 player and many from the Championship would choose us over any other club in this league. We've had a bellyful of players who only come for money ... ... what we need are those with ambition, hunger and the ability to buy into the vision of the owner, manager and club.
Just because a player is out of contract it doesn't mean he's going ... ... if they are it may mean the club want them out. IMO we only need 4, perhaps 5, new players and the likes of Hume back. (There's a couple in the Crawley match against Leeds who look worth scouting.) I'm also expecting Johnson to be clever with loans.
As long as they do it carefully. It was illegal payments that got the club relegated first time in their history.
Your last point is the main one for me, we should be looking at the Prem clubs and getting some young hungry players in who want to come and make a difference. This season I don’t think we’re a million miles away from a decent team, so would benefit from these types of players. There’s definitely ways around it but teams coming down from Championship will have a head start. I’d rather have the headache of being in the Championship and working out how to adhere to FFP!
Bloody hell that's a new twist on things How many other things are going to be trawled up from the past
I meant more in the form of win & goal bonuses and I’m sure a signing on fee doesn’t count towards the salary either.
The point cannot be underestimated. At that point we had never been relegated from the first division, club has never been the same since.
It's referring to the Shaun of The Dead film. The name of the pub in the film was called 'The Winchester'. Referencing Carl Winchester who signed today.
