It’s a sad situation, but my personal feeling is that it will take the death of a young ‘celebrity’ (probably someone I’ve not heard of) to get it through to people just how serious this thing is. I’ve heard someone say ‘only 1000’ people died yesterday and I wanted to punch his lights out.

    Cummings never got a fine...

I'm all for the Police cracking down on people who are clearly flouting the rules and taking risks. This strain of the virus is just too transmissable for people to mess about with. But to me those two women were not flouting the rules and were not taking risks, and getting a fine for that is taking the piss. Glad to hear that that level of overzealous policing has been reviewed.

Thats exactly the issue, RSS. Cummings flouted the rules hugely and got away with it. That immediately led to a “well if he can get away with it, why should I stick to the rules” attitude by certain members of the public. Which (imo) was exactly what Cummings etc wanted, the move to herd immunity and **** the “little man” - if we lose a few hundred thousand so be it, can’t have the economy damaged .....
I’m constantly angry about that and it doesn’t go away .....

Quite right to be angry at Cummings...should have been given the bum's rush....but your extrapolation from that is ....can't think of a polite word. Sit down and have a cuppa.

I never realised we had so many dwarfs in this country. 300k of them is quite a lot, when you think about it.

I don't give a thought to the dwarf population of any country. I did meet some pygmies when working in Gabon and heard about the little people when working in Cork. Our son is living on Flores island Indonesia where the skeleton of what's known as the Flores Hobbit was found.

That's lucky then, cos the funeral would be a struggle to limit to 15 people

This video was posted showing elderly and vulnerable people queuing down the road for their vaccinations, in Lewisham.
First day the surgery has had the vaccine, but not sure what process was instigated to get patients in for it.
Looks like a free for all.

As it’s by appointment, how does that even happen. I understand a small delay, but that’s ridiculous and dangerous.

This had crossed my mind back in April when Boris was in hospital with Covid. Had he not pulled through, it would have sent a jolt through the arm but I also think that the moral of the country would have probably collapsed at such a point. It does not seem as this lockdown is being taken quite as serious as the first one. There are still people walking around without masks and the traffic on the road does not seem to have noticeably diminished. Given the speed at which infections and deaths have shot up, it seems clear to me that this second wave is far more serious. I cannot see any lockdown being loosened until March with vaccinations not really have effect until it is rolled out to the working population and children simply because these people will be more active. I think we will be in the tragic position by the end of the month where deaths will have exceeded 100,000. You wonder at what point people will wake up to the fact that this government is so incompetent. In the light of the loosening in restrictions in the autumn, we now have a situation that the virus has been given the opportunity to mutate. People have rightly been critical of China's handling of affairs 12 months ago. I feel that Boris's attempts, whilst not cloaked in secrecy, have been not less dangerous and unleashed this new strain upon the world. He is totally accountable for this.

Don't think there's any plans to vaccinate children Ian. Once we get aboit 15 million vaccinated and, combined with warmer weather, deaths will be minimal by April imo.

Pretty much back to normal by August I'd guess. Though masks and some form of distancing will be around for some time yet.

This was pretty much my opinion back in the beginning of November. I am not so sure now. You are correct that the weather may have an impact although I still see us being in a similar position as now in March. With regard to normality, there was a discussion about this in either a newspaper or on line whereby I believe Chris Whitty had made a comment about next winter following a similar pattern with normality unlikely before 2023 if at all.

It is quite telling to look at availability of tickets for events in the spring and summer that had started to appear on line before Christmas. The jazz festival in France is still going ahead at this moment but the jazz gigs are still publicized on the Turner Sims website for 20th March 2021 onwards. There were talks of summer festivals being pulled on the BBC last week and the IoW festival is supposedly in the balance. The next few weeks will be telling insofar they will show his much confidence there is with a resolution in the entertainments industry. My gut feeling is that things will be a little but more relaxed than last summer but still far from "normal."
