Terrific news for Bradley Johnson if this is true, but not so good for the Club. If he gets the call I would suggest that the vultures will be circling come January. Still, a few million in the coffers would be a healthy profit. Hang on a certain Mr Chase isn't Chairman anymore is he, perhaps we won't sell ? Perhaps we are actually an ambitious club at last ? Perhaps ? http://www.eveningnews24.co.uk/sport/johnson_on_capello_s_radar_1_1081182?
If there turns out to be substance to the rumours then I think it's a great shot in the arm for all concerned. I can't see any way we'd sell any first team player before the end of the season, not unless it was silly money. The end of the season, depending on where we finish, may be a different story though. But if we stay up, I don't think anybody will be wanting to go anywhere!
City’s England internationals (caps won while with the club) Phil Boyer (1) v Wales 1976. Kevin Reeves (1) v Bulgaria 1979. Mark Barham (2) v Australia 1983, v Australia 1983. Just look at the money that is quoted for the likes of jarvis etc. We stay up then he would demand a high fee but a player like that in Johnson, like wolves I would want to keep hold of our best players. Though look at blackpool last season, they could have sold Adam for good money and they refused too and ended up with an unhappy player, which ultimately sent them down as he did not perform at all after that. I wouldnt want us to go down the same road. Would it be a risk holding on to him if we found ourselves in the same situation as Adam and blackpool...
As far as Johnson goes we're getting way ahead of ourselves here, after all we're only seven games in. In general terms, it's hard to know what's right regarding any mid-season sale for a club in our current position. Stick or twist? I guess, in the end, it's a judgement call on the mentality of the player. If the manager thinks they'll be right to play, then the (presumeably) greater chance of survival that player will give means it's better to hold on to them.
I have fond memories of Greens 1st cap as my son Maxamillian was born 31st May and Owen got a hat trick...... Straight back from Whittington hospital Archway N London, crack open a bottle of Bollinger and watch a decent England match...Happy days
Would that be the Mr Chase who was Chairman through the most successful period in the club's history? How do you think that success was financed? How do you think it was possible to develop Carrow Road into the fine stadium it now is? Or to acquire and build the fine training facilities we have at Colney? Did that show lack of ambition? And though Chase was criticised for putting money into buying land around the ground, that investment proved crucial to City's avoiding going into administration. Truth is, all clubs are "selling" clubs; players are the most saleable asset most clubs have and, as in any business, the secret is to realise value to create even more value. Chase, and South before him, were very adept at that. Every summer a top player would be moved on to provide funds for further strengthening of the team. We fans would be up in arms, predicting disaster that never happened. Yes, it did all go wrong in the end when, as Chase himself realised (and was crucified for saying it and spelling out the implications for clubs like City), the face of football changed dramatically in the 90s. But he was right and we have been struggling to adjust to it ever since.
Chase ripped the heart out of a team that not only qualified for Europe, but acquitted itself superbly along the way. Selling Sutton for £5m and replacing him with a 500k donkey like Sheron was the start. Fox to Newcastle for £2.5m tto be replaced by £250k Neil (alroight neil?) Adams from Oldham followed swiftly afterwards. But the trump card was letting Martin O'Neill slip through his fingers because the tight git wouldn't sanction a £600k deal for Dean Windass Also no great surprise that R.G.Carters tendered for - and got nearly all the building and improvement work on the stadium. Cos Fat Boy had a holding interest in them as well. He was a tyrant of mafioso proportions and most of what he did was in the interests of R.Chase, rather than NCFC.
I agree no surprise, but not for that reason. R.G. Carter had been a major business supporter of City for many many years, long before Chase became chairman. Also, they were virtually the only local company with the expertise and resources to handle contracts of that size, which is why they also won a lot of the building contracts at UEA in the early days. Imagine what an outcry there would have been if the contracts had been awarded to some outside company to the detriment of the local economy. I think you hit the nail on the head when you mention O'Neill. The fans' views of Chase are coloured primarily by events involving Walker and O'Neill. The orthodoxy is that Chase wouldn't give the former the contract he merited, causing him to jump ship to Everton; and that for £600k he could have kept O'Neill. IMO Chase wouldn't sanction going down a road he genuinely believed the club couldn't afford. There's a lot more that could be said in connection with both, but very little chance of getting to the truth.
