The great managers like Sir Alex ALWAYS defended his players in public, although his hair-dryer treatment in private was notorious. Even when they were wrong he'd protect them publicly. Graeme Souness on the other hand lost the dressing room at Liverpool after public attacks on his players. Bill Nicholson used to berate Martin Chivers regularly, even made him sit in the stand one game to watch Geoff Hurst, to see "how a proper centre-forward plays". I think that Bowyer was such an honest committed player that he completely loses it with players who give less than 100%. He never had problems with good players like Cullen or Gallagher, so again you have to look at scouting and recruitment. LB will have to do what Curbs did, and put in the hours travelling to watch a player 6 or 7 times home and away, before signing him. I'm not privy to the inner workings at Charlton, but it appears that recruitment is left to Steve Gallen. He should only recommend a player, the manager decides.
I've been a Charlton fan for 45 years, so sh1t performances are second nature, but public naming and shaming of players is something new, especially saying he doesn't care if a Charlton player is seriously injured, is new, and has to stop.
In those 45 years, have any Charlton managers faced the same circumstances as Lee Bowyer? Genuine question. I’m sounding like an apologist
Parky had to fork out from his own pocket for one player. Sir Lennie Lawrence had to deal with playing at Selhurst. There was even a whip round of the fans to buy Ronnie Moore. Times was 'ard for Curbs in the early days. But, no-one has had the same circumstances.
I loved Andy... that's why I hated Mullery, he didn't last long but for me he was a Dowie type appointment!
I didn't hear the interview. If it cannot be misinterpreted it's poor show. Support a player in public and slam them behind closed doors. Bowyer is still the man for the job.
