Not sure if posted elsewhere but what are the thoughts on Dyches comments? https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sk...for-footballers-and-testing-money-sent-to-nhs Sounds ridiculous at first glance but how much is the testing of PL players costing? Could it be redirected to the NHS and the more vulnerable or should the footy be called off all together to stop the spread of covid?
I absolutely understand where he’s coming from, and his context. It makes sense, it’s costing hundreds of thousands a week to test the PL. My only question is, how would the money help the NHS? The clubs and the league are paying for the testing and I doubt they’d Chuck that money over.
If Premier league footballers get the vaccine before the man in the street it's time to give up. Is football that important?
No idea at all. If it helps though he sat behind me in an Indian restaurant in Northampton a year or so ago. I didn’t speak to him and he didn’t speak to me. The only reason I knew who he was is because one of the people I was having a meal with said “that’s Sean Dyche.”
I can't see the season lasting much longer tbh. The numbers from the first round of EFL testing show that it's rife. Also, look at Villa tonight.
Who are they paying the money to for the testing? (I honestly don't know, is it one of the private firms the Tories have brought in?)
I’d assume a 3rd party private company of some sort, how they chose that vendor I don’t know. I read somewhere that a test is around £65, so twice weekly across the whole league and all the staff is a very sizeable wedge. Based on 60 heads per club that’s £90k a fortnight, and there’s likely more than 60 per club. Its not peanuts. It’s **** all to the PL but would potentially be a big help to local health services. I think Dyche thoughts were coming from a good place, I don’t think there was any thought of ‘get us immune’ as such.
Once the vulnerable all get vaccinated I think they should be able to buy their way in and give the money to the nhs
This is my thoughts as well, it's possibly more important for players and staff in the EFL to be vaccinated rather than premier league given how important the clubs are to the local community and local employment etc. Fair play to him for sticking his head above the parapet, it's worth a discussion imo.
Absolutely. It’s especially beneficial if the clubs are prepared for their own vaccination programmes and therefore help the public funds side. I think apart from the PPV fiasco the PL have tried to do their bit in all this.
why are footballers any more important than all other workers such as public transport workers HGV drivers delivering essential goods, Food store workers and many other "ordinary people"
Dyche is being disingenuous. The idea that a few hundred grand would materially assist the NHS, which has a budget of over £6bn, is nonsense. While all and any money is obviously welcome, the idea that footballers, who all belong to the group for whom there is virtually no risk of death, should be vaccinated before older people and others with a clear need would mean that if you have the money you get it first and enjoy whatever freedoms that gives you first. This is the diametric opposite of the government's declared aim of vaccinating from the most vulnerable downwards. If he wants that he should say that. If he didn't mean that he should take advice before he speaks to the press, as of course should Bruce after his remarks today.
On the other hand, long covid is a possible issue for players post-infection and elite athletes put a physical strain on their entire body and their immune system can already be stressed because of this - so wouldn't clubs be expected to protect the health of their athletes? Obviously SAFC have considerably less to worry about for two reasons; Firstly so many have already had the illness in the recent outbreak at the club and secondly, so many of our, ahem, 'elite athletes' have worked very hard to protect their immune systems over the last few years!
I'm sure plenty of posters on here could pay for their own vaccines, too. Where would it stop? Why not vaccinate all sportsmen and sportswomen? If the Footballers can pay for the privilege... It's morally wrong.
Totally agree.. Paying for testing is fair enough, but the vaccine has to be delivered on a fair priority basis..
So the premiership pay for their own vaccine, then the next sport, then the rich. Footballers can wait the same as the rest of us
