Cancelo was £60m, Mendy was £52m and Walker was about £50m, but otherwise they frugally spent less than that. I think Wan-Bissaka's the only other fullback in history to cost that much, of course, but yeah.
They picked four defenders against Newcastle that cost a combined £220m. They had another two on the bench that cost £110m. Kept a clean sheet though, to be fair!

That wasn't what their bench cost. It was what two players on it cost. They also had Fernandinho, Mahrez and Aguero, plus a few cheapo signings. Probably about £250m in all.
It's not really relevant. Surely that would be more of a reason to block any takeovers, if we had that miraculous power, somehow? Summer of 2008, we'd just won a trophy and qualified for Europe, though. Better than any Newcastle season in your lifetime, basically.
