I agree with you nobody else can play that number 10 role to anywhere near Honeyman's level. I don't think Irvine has anywhere near the same urgency as Honeyman. I know his stats on how much ground he covered were always supposed to be pretty good but it always seemed to be at a stroll to me. But yes coming on for the last 20 mins when opposition tiring he might do a job. Probably an academic debate - the chances of either the club or Irvine letting bygones be bygones are, I suspect, not high!
I don't dislike Burnsy at all, when he concentrates on the football and not the old pals act with Peter Swan. And am glad he was asking McCann about KLP before Christmas and checking in again on the issue yesterday. Just felt he was stirring it a bit yesterday with his language and had I been in McCann's position would have felt frustrated by the line of questioning. That's all.
Obviously, Maddison was a waste of money but it wasn't anywhere near as bad as it could've been. There were several champ clubs happy to pay £1.5-2m for him, we paid a decent loan fee but he remained on his L1 wages. It was a huge relief he was a tit as otherwise, we'd have shelled out £1.5m for him and a good longterm contract only for him to be naff. We lost money, but we could've lost a whole lot more. And what we lost on him, we made up by getting Wilks for £400k.
Agree about Honeyman and I thought he wasn't even at his best yesterday, his contribution to the 2nd goal notwithstanding. I wouldn't have Irvine back, thought he was pretty poor towards the end of last season even before lockdown and I've always thought his distribution was sub-standard. I'd rather persevere with Slater unless McCann has someone better lined up.
Yeah there’s no point spending big in jan, I’ve read they have 9 first teamers out so a couple of marquee signings won’t save them. Oh well, how sad, never mind
Chris Wilder being a Sheffield United supporter, successful manager and well liked by the fans, while Grant McCann is none of those things. A difference I was fully aware of when I made my post.
We paid a big loan fee, £100k at least to loan him from Peterborough for the rest of the season. If he’d have been good we’d have signed him on a free transfer & he’d have got the signing on fee, doubt it would have been anything like 1 million, & wages, which probably would have been decent in Championship.
The second half of last season was a disaster but not all of the managers doing. Some of us are a bit more fair minded and are prepared to give him a second chance. He has took an enormous amount of stick, some justified but much of it was way over the top. This season he has done remarkably well considering the state the club must have been in after we dropped like a stone out of the Championship. Much bigger clubs then ours have found the drop horrifying and continued to flounder in League 1. But McCann must be doing something right because we have led this league for most of the season and probably still would be if we hadn't have had so many postponements. Not many Hull City teams over the years have been in the top three of any league from the start of the season up to the New Year. Of course Grant McCann has got to have us there at the end of the season and I see no reason barring an internal cock up of Biblical proportions that we we cannot achieve that. I think it's time, we gave him a bit of slack and a bit of respect.
