What do you people think is the greatest F1 car to ever set a wheel on a track around the world. There are some pretty obvious candidates, which i won't name, i'm curious to see if you think the same way as me. My choice has to be the 1988 McLaren Honda MP4/4. It entered 16 races, and won 15 of them. Maybe it was helped somewhat by it's driver lineup, but on a results standpoint, nothing gets close.

On a side note, it also had a cameo in gran turismo 3, as the polyphony 002.

Can I copy & paste your first post? Being a Senna Fan started watching in -88, The red and white Marlboro McLaren MP4-4 is by far the sexiest F1 car ever. Other than that, it would be my own Ferrari (I wish) with the model name Renault Clio :p

I started watching in the early - mid 90's, when i was still a toddler, i've just used the magic of the internet to go back and watch races from before i was born. I loved those marlboro mclarens, you knew what to look out for in a race, as they were distinctive.

The MP4/4 is my choice. But other mentions to the Ferrari 500, Lotus-Ford 79, Williams FW14B. The Ferrari F2004 and Red Bull RB7 where/are also very dominant.

Yea exactly, they really stood out. I think they had a very clean stylish look.

Where did you watch those races? I have been trying to find another source than youtube to have an F1 marathon and nostalgia trip and even find some stuff before 88. Unfortunately without much luck. I found one place once, but they asked for a ridiculous amount of money to be able to download/stream it. This was a few years ago and I can't remember what site it was.

yea I watched some on youtube but they are all split into 10 minute parts more or less and very annoying. I'll keep searching, there must be somewhere better.

    FW14B

That car looked like a beast when the first FW14 was launched. Fantastic car and took Mansell to a much deserved title.

Great link thanks. I also made some more searches and found a really amazing site:
    http://www.tremek.com/forum/f1-videos

They have races dated back as far as 1959, and alot of the seasons with full races!!
I am currently downloding 1984 round 1 Brasil in full. Sennas first race in F1.

    Lotus 88.

Read up about it. The most innovative car that was never allowed on the grid.

If you are looking for the greatest ever F1 car, you need to look at one that passed the test of time year after year. For that the Lotus 72 should be looked at. One season wonders are very common and many are evolutions of earlier models which have been tuned to perfection, but the Lotus 72 was effectively the same car and chassis that ran for many years. It also perfected the early world of aerodynamics and side mounted radiators. The nucleus of what modern F1 cars can trace their roots back to.

ah, the joys of yester year, racing *** packets around the table. No doubt F1 is one of the reasons i started smoking. It was a sad day when McLaren lost that livery.

In my opinion, the Lotus 49 (originally Lotus green and first seen in 1967) will never be surpassed unless F1 becomes jet-powered. It is the truest ancestor of all modern day F1 cars.

Here is Damon Hill driving his father's 49C: the car of first year of the wings - 1968. (The original '67 variant was wingless).

Good choice, but in the grand scheme of things, wasn't the 72 more revolutionary?
