Mike Ashley is ranked as the 10th richest man in the British game in FourFourTwo's Football Rich List for the 2011-12 season.

Ashley’s increased wealth has grown from the small chain of sports shops which he built into SportsDirect.com, the UK’s biggest sportswear retailer, and owner of brands such as like Donnay, Dunlop Slazenger, Kangol, Karrimor and Lonsdale.

His increased wealth has come as he has continued to acquire budget sports brands, such as American extreme sports label No Fear.

    1. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan £20bn
Manchester City (Last year £20bn, 1st)

    2. Alisher Usmanov £12.4bn
    Arsenal (Last year £8bn, 3rd)

    3. Lakshmi Mittal £11.8bn
    QPR (Last year £17bn, 2nd)

    4. Roman Abramovich £10.3bn
    Chelsea (Last year £7.4bn, 4th)

    5. The Liebherr Family £3bn
    Southampton (Last year £3bn, 5th)

    6. Joe Lewis £2.8bn
Tottenham Hotspur (Last year £2.7bn, 6th)

What we have to remember is that no man, no matter how rich, is going to spend a giant chunk of his fortune, especially when most of that fortune is more assets than cash, and that actual cash could be significantly less.

Mike Ashley's actual cash wealth could only be within the tens of millions quite easily. We can't tell. And as his companies have boards of directors, it isn't as easy as just sliding in and dipping his hand into an endless money pit.

Note that the two largest spenders are Mansour and Abramovich. Mansour has a PERSONAL wealth of £20billion, which speaks for itself. With Abramovich, one of his first businesses was selling contraband on the black market, and he admitted that he paid millions in bribes to acquire huge stakes in Russian companies which turned from millions to billions of pounds in value. He's had dozens of businesses, and now owns an investment company which couldn't be anymore shady or 'under wraps' if it tried.

Compare that to the likes of Mittal, Ashley and Liebherr, who are all mostly involved with heavily regulated public limited companies, where board members ultimately have more control over the company than they do. No matter how much the companies make, these people simply aren't allowed to take what they like, and they will ultimately receive sums based on the percentage of shares they own.

So really, expecting some of these people to suddenly appear with £20, 40 or 60million in cash without much fuss is just entirely unrealistic.

It's just for those who occasionally wonder why some seemingly rich owners are such tight arses. Not just Newcastle and our owner, but others too.

  18. He's not gonna give us any of his personal wealth, all the money we get to spend on players will come from the selling of other players.
