    Swansea City 1 v 2 Aston Villa

    Competition - League Division 3
    Venue - Vetch Field
    Date - 27 December 1971
    Kick off - 3pm

    Teams:
Swansea City (Manager - Roy Bentley)

    Tony Millington
    Peter Jones
    Tony Screen
    Wyndham Evans
    Herbie Williams
    Barrie Hole
    Billy Screen
    Geoff Thomas
    Glenville Davies
    Dai Gwyther
    Brian Evans

    Aston Villa

    Goalkeeper Jim Cumbes
    Defender/Right back Mick Wright
    Defender/Centre back George Curtis
    Left back Charlie Aitken
    Centre half Fred Turnbull
    Midfielder Jimmy Brown
    Midfielder Bruce Rioch
    Midfielder/Forward Willie Anderson
    Centre forward Andy Lochhead
    Forward Geoff Vowden
    Winger Ray Graydon

The ref was Mr. D J Biddle (Bristol)

I went to the Vetch that day - my 14th birthday - with my late father.

We played well in front of a pretty full Vetch Field - the crowd was 24,419 - and I still think a draw would have been a fair result. I remember Barrie Hole skying a volley over the bar at the Double Decker end.

Graydon and Aitken scored for Villa.

I remember that one being there as a 16 year old on a packed North Bank. There were a load of Villa fans there if I remember correctly.

There were - and also at the corresponding match the previous season in August 1970. The scoreline was the same 1-2 to Villa.
I was on the East Bank that day.
For the game 49 years ago today, I was in the Centre Stand.

Yes the Swans were better than Villa on Boxing Day 1971 but lost...I was on the North Bank and if memory serves correctly quite a few Villa skinheads tried to take the NB but were kicked off by the then Swansea hard core...I wasn’t one of those

Snap Azzuri. I stood at the East end of the North Bank and the skinheads stood nearer the West tunnel.
