I suspect that very few on here will remember the Berlin airlift that took place during 1948-9. As a small child I do remember asking my parents where all the large planes were going. For a whole year the allies kept the food and fuel flowing to the city in a mammoth logistics exercise. Nice to see that the help is being responded to.

"Germany's Lufthansa is airlifting fresh fruit and vegetables to Britain as firms seek to beat the lorry chaos at sea ports.

The airline is carrying 80 tonnes of food from Frankfurt to Doncaster Sheffield Airport in a Boeing 777."

I'm always suspiscious of such studies - it's never really apparent who commissioned them and why. This particular bit of the article sets off alarm bells for me:

The researchers said the analysis showed an urgent need for policies, such as meat taxes, to ensure food prices reflect their true costs. This would be fairer, they said, as consumers eating climate-damaging diets would pay for their pollution, rather than the costs of increased storms, floods and droughts being spread across everyone in society as they are today. They said the revenues raised should be used to help poorer families manage price rises and to incentivise farmers to be more environmentally friendly.

Any excuse to hit people with more taxes - taxes which I'm damn sure wouldn't be used in the manner suggested. At least not in the UK...

Interesting article Toby - but we are not just talking about meat taxes here, which I agree with. The fact is that organic mixed farming would result in an increase in prices for all foodstuffs. Do you think that a price of 90 cents is fair for a cabbage ? Of course this has absolutely no relationship whatsoever to the time, and use of land, needed to grow it. It is only possible through monoculture,no crop rotation, extensive fertilization and use of insecticides. A return to the farming of the past - smaller fields, crop rotation and mixed cultures would necessitate dramatic rises in prices for all food - not just for meat. The other assumption made is that organic animal husbandry involves animals eating grass, which means less meat on their bodies - it is well known that the use of red clover in animal fodder increases the meat yield by about 20%, and the same is true for some perennial crops such as Comfrey. The article also says nothing about the consumption of wild animals such as rabbit, hare, wild boar, roedeer and so on, which is common in the area where I live - would you tax these as well ? Me eating part of a wild boar which has been killed to protect crops makes no difference whatsoever in terms of Co2.

The postie has just arrived and brought a Christmas card all the way from Rickmansworth. On the back of the envelope was a large printed Customs Declaration CN22 to state what was in the envelope and that it could be officially opened to check the contents. Description of contents: Christmas Card. Weight: 0.013 kgs. Value GBP 0.50. Company VAT No. - . Company EROI Number -. Pre-registration tax scheme -
This was the followed by a lengthy declaration that the contents did not contravene any customs regulations.

Welcome to a mad mad world. :steam: Still I suppose people knew what they voted for.<doh>

The person who sent it does work as a translator for the EU in Brussels part of the year, so yes she could be a real security risk as well as sending cards with subversive texts like Merry Xmas.

Do our vegetarians eat fish as it looks as though there will be a lot of it on sale? It seems that fishermen are venting their fury tonight. It was obvious that it would happen.

Really sad to see that a further 574 people died in the latest reported figures. I know from personal experience what it is like to lose a loved one just before Christmas, and how despite your best efforts you cannot get it of your mind. With nearly another 40,000 new cases there will be a lot more heartbreak in the next few weeks.

Tragically so and this is with the most vulnerable supposedly shielding although unfortunately we will hear of big family gatherings for Christmas and New Year with the excuse of “we can do what we want “

It was only on the third reading that I realised that you cooked the trout in water.
