Yes indeed, Aristotle suggested that the earth was a ball rather than flat but it was Galileo who was disowned by the Catholic Church for his views that the earth was not the centre of the universe.

Surely you mean Copernicus? It was Galileo who was considered a heretic for promoting the Copernicus view that the earth revolved around the sun. He was tried by Pope Urban and found guilty and made to recant. Because Galileo was Italian he was threatened with torture and even death, whereas Copernicus was free to expound his theory, just that no-one believed him.
They didn't know the facts then, but to compare an expert climatologist to Nigel Lawson is poor.

Aristotle was the first (as far as we know) to suggest that the earth was not flat...

I happen to be two thirds way through a book, Galileo's Daughter, about his life. It makes quite harrowing reading. It was actually the Inquisition which threatened him with death and torture. The depressing aspect is that things haven't changed. Look at the abuse Greta Thunberg received for saying Listen to the scientists.

Just heard on the BBC breakfast news that another mass anti-lockdown demonstration is planned for central London today <doh><doh><doh><doh><doh>

    That's just what we need.
Highest infection rates in the country, a new more infectious strain, and thousands of selfish morons want to run riot in London on the last Xmas shopping Saturday, and attack the Police.
I wouldn't blame the rozzers if they get out the water cannons and soak this lot good and proper.
Chuck in some detergent as well, clean some of them up a bit.

Breaking news that they’re now considering travel restrictions! Thought that would of been one of the first things you’d do to stop the spread of anything ffs! Now shut the fuking schools and we might see a drop in numbers.

Boris Johnson is going to announce a new level of restrictions - Tier 4 - for London & the South East.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-55376727

His Press Conference is scheduled for 4pm today.
Travel restrictions will be on the agenda I expect.
Perhaps complete closure of all pubs and restaurants as well?
Schools and colleges should certainly be closed...
We'll know in a few hours.

    This is really bad.

No Christmas concession in Tier 4.
Households are not allowed to mix.
I was going to visit my old mum for Christmas Day. I think this will be the first December 25th in my lifetime that I've not spent back in Charlton, in the house where I grew up, with my family.

But the infectious nature of this new variant virus is frightening.
How can it spread so much faster?
Either it needs a much smaller amount to get a grip once it's inside you, or it persists much longer in the air, particularly indoors.
It's heart breaking, but I cannot risk going home this Christmas.
I'm wondering if the factory I work in should now close on Monday. We were breaking up on Wednesday anyway.

Keir Starmer told him this on Wednesday but
    Johnson took no notice.

I hope all the rule breakers etc are proud of themselves. By the way my mum has isolated and I’ve abided by the rules throughout :emoticon-0148-yes:

I feel safe within my family bubble , why wouldn’t you? , to pull the rug from under your feet at the eleventh hour is horrendous- in my mind he’s made a terrible mistake earlier by inflicting this powderpuff second lockdown and now must pay the price - not fit for purpose springs to mind. I’m really fuked off by it all and by the dimwitted idiots that are carrying it on and spreading now

Will not be seeing my daughter this Christmas. I feel very sad about that. It has been a ****ty day, my TV broke down this morning. Getting one point and then hearing about Covid has put the lid on a day I would like to forget. Oh well life goes on.

I think they're keeping him to carry the can for the mistakes during the pandemic, and will offload him as the vaccine begins to take effect. Boris is useless at a time like this - he seems more interested in being a boffo chap and avoiding what could be unpopular decisions, beyond defending Patel from bullying charges and allowing the ongoing cronyism scandal.

This is only a party political issue if you are a complete bell end, which obviously applies to one particular poster on here.

Let’s see if he can apply his minuscule intellect to the following.

Wales (Labour) has just announced a complete lockdown - their 3rd.

    Germany
    Austria
    Netherlands
    France
    Sweden

have all hugely tightened Covid restrictions this week.

Spain (the irony) is a basket case with Covid.

And Italy has today has announced a record number of both Covid cases, and deaths.

Living abroad & not paying taxes in the U.K. not only makes some people unpatriotic, but thick as mince as well.

Members may be concerned for @The Punter’s Pal now his favourite restaurant(Wetherspoons) has closed again.
For those who have not had the misfortune to meet him, this diet imposed on him may bring him down to a 38" waist.
