I don't think we're as comparable as the US, but there are a lot of veterans who suffer from PTSD and/or are homeless. There is help for them through several charities, and also some job opportunities exclusively for ex-squaddies nowadays. That support network wasn't there when I left over 20 years ago, but I was lucky I had good qualifications which I gained throughout my time served (14 years!). I walked straight into telecomms and have been here ever since. Unfortunately, it's a fact of war. When you are faced with the enemy and put under immemse pressure, even the best soldiers can crack. Recommend reading Jason Foxs' book Battle Scars - he's now a member of the instructing team on the reality show SAS:Who Dares Wins (don't know if you get that down there?) but he was very close to killing himself before he sought help - and he was an elite soldier.
