Robert Peel oversaw the export of irish food to the foreign market while irish people were starving to death. I suppose he was maybe liberal for his day.

Long time ago though, an official apology was issued and that's good enough for me.

It was the Whigs in power though. Peel had flagged up his concerns, and got told he was over reacting.

I'm aware of all circumstances surrounding the famine. Queen Vic played her part too, putting a limit on how much aid foreign governments could send so not to embarrass her paltry offerings.

I suppose the disaster was Capitalism in it's purest form, transporting food past starving men women and children to sell on the open market.

Thankfully we're a lot further on than that, and I'd probably be living in Sligo as my family moved from there at the time, every cloud eh

Not now but there might be the odd person harking back to the Civil War probably in their 80s and their parents were involved in the war and it's ingrained in them but a dying breed.

I was more going for a wind up, but in the spirit of peace that's descended I'll bow to your obviously greater knowledge, especially as I can see I'm on a loser with this one anyway. :emoticon-0100-smile

I hold a grudge against Britain certainly as soon as they politically leave Ireland my grudge goes with them.

I have never met an Irish person I didn't like , we share a similar genetic heritage and basic human values.

The best pubs in North London are owned and full of Paddies and I've had many a good game of pool with a paddy enjoying a beer with the racing channel in the corner.

They seamlessly assimilated to London life .

I was once the only English man in a bar in Dublin, when Ireland were playing England just down the road. I don't think I had to buy a drink all game, people just kept bringing them to me.
