IMHO, these are low quality products which would barely run any applications and would quickly end up in a drawer forgotten so not worth buying. Someone suggested a second hand-laptop, I would go with that. When I were a kid all I got for Xmas was a tangerine, a walnut and half-a-day's holiday from t'coalmine.
I don't think the reason you want it is irrelevant as, without knowing what it's for, it's very difficult to give an opinion on the value of having one.

Better off getting them a tablet .. asus or HP touchpads might fit your budget .. allow web browsing and games etc and they're in at the moment ... better than a netbook .. avforums classifieds is a good place to hunt ..better than eBay for gadget stuff ..
Apple products are designed so you cant remove the battery, even when off any sound can be heard from mic.... The FBI used this for listening in to NY drugs cartel recently...
