Its not just a win. Its the confidence and a cobbled together team attacking in numbers. Can only get better.
I'd have Diamond, mcgeady and Grigg starting on Saturday after that. Worries around Wright and Macfadzean after their performances tonight. Wins a win though and good to see us coming back from a goal down.
Diamond impressed tonight and i think Scowen had a decent game. Grigg did ok without really threatening but definately improved. Much more positive until the last 10 when we sat deeper and deeper and invited them onto us. Possibly a lack of fitness showing amongst some of them which leads to this drop off?
Tier 2 in London so can only meet in groups of 6 and any one living in the NE can't go - better off with a and
Diamond impressed when he ran at people and McGeady looked busy when he came on, oh and Leadbitter was very good with the dead balls.
There was progress in there for me tonight. We were doing things a little differently like the crossing positions and getting more bodies in the box.
some lad called Carl Graham just spent a couple of hours on a excercise bike in Boundary park to watch that, deserves a medal.
https://safc.com/news/team-news/2020/december/oldham-athletic/report-vs-oldham-athletic Oldham Athletic 1-2 Sunderland AFC Lee Johnson secured his first win as Sunderland Head Coach on Tuesday evening, as a 2-1 win at Oldham Atheltic ensured the Lads’ progression in the Papa John’s Trophy. Bobby Grant rifled the Latics into the lead on 13 minutes, but Chris Maguire’s opportunistic strike ensured parity was restored before the break. The Lads were barely troubled during a dominant second period, with their reward coming just after the hour mark when Josh Scowen’s superb header found the net. Patterson produced a brilliant save shortly after, clawing the ball to safety despite a wicked deflection to help seal victory at Boundary Park. Johnson’s men will be in the hat for Thursday’s last-16 draw (11.15am live on Talksport2) Patterson and Jack Diamond were handed starts at Boundary Park, with Callum McFadzean also handed a chance to impress the new Head Coach. Both youngsters made a flying start to proceedings in Great Manchester, as the stopper soared to deny Danny Rowe and Diamond tore down the right at every opportunity. Bright play from Conor McLaughlin saw opposition ‘keeper Ian Lawlor bravely claim a dangerous cross on nine minutes, but Oldham edged in front just a few minutes later. Grant struck the blow, firing a 25-yard strike into the bottom corner after Carl Piergianni strode out of defence and picked out the forward. The Lads responded well and Maguire forced Lawlor into action before McFadzean tumbled in the box, but despite loud appeals the referee waved play on. Undeterred, Johnson’s men continued to press forward and got their reward on the half-hour mark, as Diamond menaced once more and a fluffed clearance looped into the path of Maguire to level from close range. Sunderland continued to dominate the ball following the interval, with Leadbitter and Power linking well only for the defence to scramble the ball clear as the latter looked to pick out Grigg. A double change followed on 63 minutes, with Aiden McGeady entering the fray alongside the returning Charlie Wyke. And the duo were congratulating their teammates within seconds, as Scowen sent a pinpoint header into the corner after connecting with Leadbitter’s cross. With 10 minutes remaining, Bailey Wright lost his footing and Davis Keillor-Dunn broke in, but despite diving before the ball took a wicked deflection, Patterson produced an excellent save and managed to claw the ball to safety. Oldham Atheltic:Lawlor, Jombati, Piergianni, Whelan (Garrity 67), Rowe (***e 56), Keillor-Dunn, Grant, Ntambwe, Barnett, Diarra, Bahamboula (McAleny 67). Sunderland AFC:Patterson, McLaughlin, Flanagan, Wright, Power, Maguire (McGeady 63), Scowen, Diamond, Grigg (Wyke 63), Leadbitter (Dobson 69), McFadzean. Subs not used:Matthews, Embleton, Graham, Neil.
If only we had a decent striker, how many chances go begging is criminal. We are were far superior to that Oldham team, yet at the end we could have conceded and ended with a draw. Wyke is our top League goalscorer, Lincoln have centre-back , Montsma who has scored as many as Wyke. It really is holding us back Lets hope the new regime can find us one pronto.
