I’m sure Ashley could lean on the government a bit, and say something like, “I could buy Debenhams and save all these jobs, but I need to sell Newcastle to raise the money”. Would they have any sway with the PL?

I agree.... Think he's taking a punt in the hope to boost his followers and gain future credibility... I mean everyone knows there's stuff going on and arbitration has started, so simply saying 'some news' is far too weak isn't it...
Rafa's quarantine time is over now. You're going to start hearing a lot of rumours for him in the next week or so. Leicester are rumoured to want Rafa when Rodgers inevitably jumps ship, probably to Arsenal. Arsenal are rumoured to want Rafa, but the buy out fee is a big question mark as I alluded to last week. If they can get that reduced, expect to hear a lot. The Derby rumour won't go away. Apparently it is a national holiday in UAE at the moment, but once that's over the Derby takeover should go through and there will be a lot of rumours again. I've heard a few slight rumours that Palace want Rafa to takeover Hodgson at the end of the season for a long term project.
