I didn't say we didn't. If we hadn't been on such a high we wouldn't have come back to earth with such a bump.
Ron Atkinson and his brother played for them. We had 99% of the play and they scored the winner in the 1% they had, late on too, from memory. Didn't Pompey do exactly the same to us at home the following week ? Two defeats that cost us promotion in 70/71, plus the abandoned match v Blackburn when we 2-0 up.
No, we had already played Portsmouth, they beat us 1-0 the week after we had beaten Charlton in the FA Cup. After losing to Oxford we lost 3-1 away to Luton then the following Saturday we drew 0-0 away to Bolton. Think you will still have memories of that one. We were 5 points behind Sheff Utd but wouldn't have gone up if we had got the extra 5 points from winning all 3 of those games as Sheff Utd had a lot better goal average as was used in those days.
Luton away when player manager Terry Neill got himself sent off ? The three games I mentioned didn't help, two 1-0 home defeats when we did everything but score and that re-arranged game with Blackburn that ended up 0-0. I honestly thought after that epic win at the Battle of Bramall plus our two new players, Knighton and Baxter that we were First Division bound that year. But we blew it.
First time I spoke to you was in Hull city centre just after we signed Knighton and Baxter. That will shortly be 50 years ago. Fooking hell!
4-0 or win on pens as always Hopefully it might happen this time, would be nice to actually dominate AND score
It was a piss take, after you'd said you spoke to him 50 years ago....they're wasted when you have to explain them.
Can’t we coax The Other Phantom across here? He’d be able to fill in the missing names. Great stats man TOP!
I agree, he was a great contributor. I'll have a think to see if I have a way of getting in touch with him.
Well for me this is a tough one, first time a crowd is allowed back in which will straight away give them a lift, this obviously makes it harder for us, however it's another hurdle to overcome so let's make a real statement and no matter what elements we come up against prove why we are too of the league.
I'm not so sure about the crowds. A group of people sitting quietly and spread apart, under bright lights and wearing surgical masks could just be off putting. please log in to view this image
Which team other than us could use the oppositions 12th man (namely FOG) as one of the reasons we didn’t get promoted?
And bloody Blackburn again - the same season away at Ewood - which we won 1-0 - was where I nearly lost my life!!! Got pelted by sharpened coins from the top of a stand, tried to to get out but pushed back in by the rozzers, got attacked on the coach when they started rocking the coach, throwing bricks through the windows whilst everyone lay in the aisle - then attacked again at traffic lights when our bus driver got off the bus and dragged an opposition supporter onto the coach, gave him a few punches and then pushed him out the doors then drove off as the lights changed to green! What memories!
Yes can understand your thinking but I just think psychology wise, after playing in front of no one then fans been allowed, it's a great way to build up your players to give that extra 10% plus if I was one of them one thousand then mask or no mask i would be shouting my head off. It's just my thinking but surely after all this time walking out into an empty stadium then to suddenly see people there it must give you a lift. % plus if I was one of them thousand allowed mask or no mask i would be shouting my head off.
