So 27 hysteria filled days of lashing out and butt hurt from the remain voters as Brexit edges closer .

    That explains the tantrums recently.

    :cheesy:

    Yes they are !

by removing statues you are doing exactly that .

Once the statue is gone , people will forget/ there is no focal point for discussion.

Glasgow was built on a history of trade...much of tobacco based .

Much of the trade would be connected to slave Labour and practices not acceptable ina modern world .

people want to rip down statues , rename streets and stop using the term merchant city (where much of the amazing architecture, built using trade money, that Glasgow is known for is )

what is that if it’s not eradicating history ?

So only local people talk about it? That makes no sense.

Put statues in museums if you want. No one is destroying them. Teach what actually happened in schools, that's what they're for.

Should Jimmy Saville or Michael Jackson statues stay up? Saddam Hussein statues in Iraq?

Eradicating history is refusing to teach people about it or claiming things didn't happen.

Changing street names and removing statues from public display is acknowledging that the 'achievements' of these people are not worthy of celebration.

Never said only local people ... visitors also see them.

I get your point to museums ...

I’m not really looking for a debate on this as your last two points will open up another discussion connected to the debate about history that I’m not clever enough to counter but there is a debate there .

Trev stumped me when he mentioned hitler and the nazis ... ****in 4 by 2 !!!

Will the Cities and universities that have gained from slavery be giving the money back?

I do see where you're coming from, don't get me wrong. It was a kneejerk reaction due to the goings-on at the time and shouldn't have been pushed through like that. I don't see anything wrong with it though, no one is getting hurt and nothing is being distorted/eradicated. Street names change, statues come and go, etc...Life moves on. Should everything always stay the same forever?

You have started a debate on statues, slavery seems to be the big thing for 2020. So can you answer the question?

Liverpool and Bristol are just 2 cities that gained from slavery, should the council pay back the £ billions to Africans?

If I want to chat to the human equivalent of turnip I may as well pop down to Tesco.

Give me some facts, not some twitter pish. How much was given to which city? By whom? What was it? Donations? Buildings? Who profited?

If the government seizes money off drug dealers they don't give it back to colombian villagers. You can't calculate paybacks like that, the people involved are all dead. 'Black people' aren't a uniform group, this is what you low-IQ racists fail to understand.

    So where do you stop?

What is the date in history where the cut off is?

Do we tear down the coliseum? That was built by slaves and slaves were slaughtered in it.

What about the pyramids, Stonehenge, any ancient Greek structure still standing?

Do we take a knee for all those press ganged into the Navy?

    It's total bullshit.

A statue isn't a historic building, it's a glorification of someone in society. If society doesn't think that person deserves it then why keep them up in public spaces?

Really? I don’t remember any of my history teachers taking us round town to look at statues.

They didn’t tell us Francis Drake was a slave trader either. Must have forgot that bit when they told us about the Spanish Armada, eh?
