Traditionally made with minced meat, fruit and spices but our sweet tooth took over and it morphed into just fruit, spice and suet to keep it all together so we still call it mincemeat instead of minced meat. #Grovesplaining
You can get veggie suet these days, it's what I use in my mince pies if I am making them for work just in case any veggie want one. I also use vegetable shortening instead of lard but for home use it is beef suet and pig lard all the way. They taste better, veggies, Jews and Muslims are missing out. I use butter and eggs in the pastry though so vegans can f.uck off.
