I'm not sure about this but don't Bristol City have rich owners and didn't Johnson have quite a good budget for players. I seem to recall they sold a couple of players for decent money but I suspect that they were still running at a loss funded by the owner. Stand to be corrected on this if wrong, isn't there a Bristol City supporter that posts on this board who could confirm?
T-bone mate. Went out and bought it on the strength of the potential win!! Back to spam fritters and cabbage after tomorrow.
Did a good job at Bristol City, just couldn’t quite get them into the play offs. I’d be absolutely fine with him.
They'll turn their nose up at him because he's done jack ****. Midtable League One manager who then somehow managed to get a job at Bristol City who he's keeping midtable in The Championship. He's never been in the promotion mix as manager
He was the longest serving manager in the championship, at an ambitious club, before he was sacked. So whilst he would not get me excited, he can't be THAT bad.
I'd prefer someone who has been in a promotion battle and won and he's not been in one to try and win. He's done an ok job in all of his jobs but he's not been very very good in any of them
yeh like I say - I don't think he'd even be in my top 20 choices. but he wouldn't be the disaster some will make out.
Yup, the same thing that happened with FPP, Maja’s contract and promotion to the Championship at the first attempt. It all looked like it was happening until it wasn’t.
To be honest - all 3 of Not the top 20, D3D4Football podcasts and Gabriel Sutton think appointing Cowley is a no brainer for us as the right decision. And all 3 of those sources seem to me to be respected voices of reason for EFL stuff.
He took over midtable Barnsley in this league and kept them midtable before getting the Bristol job. Parkinson has a better record than he does in that respect. Obviously like any new manager I'd give them the benefit of the doubt but I wouldn't be happy about him. I doubt it'll be him anyway. Can't imagine we'd want someone who hasn't done anything at all during his career
Probably queuing for the physio’s bench , as a side issue is Danny Graham trying to be our answer to Akinfenwa lumbering around the pitch - No cancel that Aki scores goals .
We have to get out of league one to get into a position where we’re in the play off mix in the championship. If we managed that in the next 18 months I’d be surprised with any manager. It’s going to take some time to get there given we’re currently plodding about in league one.
I've got to say, for me by FAR the most concerning thing for me yesterday wasn't Poyet. That could have fallen through for any reason. Unfortunate and slightly embarassing yes - but frankly could be forgotten by 7pm tonight if a takeover announced and good manager appointed. By far more worrying for me was Cookie's redundancy. I know he had been furloughed ages ago. And I thought it was old news. But all the tweets from his family members etc make me think the final hammer blow has indeed finally come yesterday. I know we are a business, and perhaps this is the old regime clearing the books for the new guys who are looking at it as pure cold numbers not people. But from a fans sentiment perspective, this has been massively bungled and would be a fairly cheap and easy way for the new owners to get the PR with the fans right early doors. The fact its been bungled is more concering for me than the Poyet situation.
Agreed. Its a massive decision for the new owner. As they say, you only get one chance to make a first impression. When drumaville brought Keane in you could just tell that everyone got behind them. It was seen as a departure from what had gone before, a clear dividing line and a sign that the highest of standards were now going to be expected. It was a risk, as any appointment is, but they immediately got the fans behind them on it and I think they'd have been forgiven had it not worked out. If it's someone like Cowley then the new owner won't get that immediate boost in terms of support. Even more so given the fact that the previous, disliked (to say the least) owners won't have left the club. If it goes well then it'll all be good, but if the manager doesn't hit the ground running then their judgment will immediately be called into question. Not saying I agree with that, but that's the reality, and I couldn't blame any fans that did it. But as you say, we can't just give big money to any relatively big name manager because if they aren't going to buy into the whole (hopeful) journey they'll probably do more harm than good. Massive decision for them; I didn't agree with Quinny when he said that if a manager doesn't work out then the person who appointed him should go as well (if that was the case you'd make a similar argument for a manager going every time a signing didn't work out, it's nonsensical) but whoever they choose, and how they fare, will certainly set the early tone for how much faith and trust the "new" regime gets
