I think you guys might be overlooking how important listed building status is The council certainly not take lightly any decision regarding that status. Bear in this is Grade 1 listed too. There would be some serious greasing of the wheels required with the secretary of state. Highly unlikely that Historic England would put it on their list for delisting or demolition. The secretary of state can take his own view of having consulted others, but its pretty rare. In terms of being to accommodate a stadium extension, I'd say the chances are slim to none. Unless the Saudis are going to somehow fund Historic England to protect other assets etc. I deal with the heritage teams and historic England all the time and can confirm they wouldn't give a **** about NUFC stadium needs Its far more likely we will move outside the city if we do need stadium expansion, with that area becoming an extension of the University hub (which attracts a lot of foreign funding from middle east and china). To be honest the Saudi interest in funding in the area is probably a red herring. They are already investing heavily across this country, and in our Universities such as Newcastle and Durham. I wouldn't worry, with Brucey Ball we will need to downsize if anything.
I am enjoying this thread though. Whether its bread, cheese, Guinness, a lack of listed building knowledge, just a general desperation, or disregard for reality - its all entertaining. Despite all the silliness the takeover is on and will be completed by June 2021 It'll just have zero to do with all this ****
It really wouldn't, not with a feckin' great wall in the way - I guess it would still be light elsewhere, but your your perspective, looking out of your window it's now dark (curtains or not) n'est-ce pas?
Yeah that’s how it works.... Who decided it was the Saudis that have bought this grade 1 listed halls of residence btw?
I work for one of the Newcastle Uni's. There has been a rumour for months that the Saudis were buying property to turn into exclusive student flats for students of Newcastle and Northumbria. Both have large middle Eastern student populations. Will stress that it was a rumour. But there were talks between the Uni's, Newcastle City Council and an anonymous buyer in May and June.
That building has already been converted though & I’ll have you a wager that this is nothing more than a Middle Eastern fund investing in student lets, for no other reason than the ROCE makes student accommodation a good investment in a volatile market. They won’t care what colour, race or creed occupies them.
More than likely. Student let's are a big thing at the moment and there has been a lot of development over the last few years. It is prime real estate and developers are making a killing.
Erm think you'll find this thread is the ONLY reason the takeover is still going ahead. PIF were amazed and humbled that so much ****e could be spouted on one subject that it reached 1000 pages they felt inclined to keep going with it despite pulling out. The takeover can only be approved once this thread hits 2000 pages so no sitting back and enjoying this ****e, some of us are putting in extra and unnecessary comments to hit the 2000...
