You’re right. Daily new cases have been dropping steadily since the peak of 33,470 on 12 November to today’s 11,299. The deaths figure is always bad on a Tuesday because it includes a lot of the weekend’s total which aren’t always certified straight away. The important thing is the fall in new cases though, which would suggest the lockdown is working.

The Christmas experiment has been forced on the Government, mainly because they know that if some latitude wasn’t allowed, many people would break the rules anyway, so I’m prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt for now. What I completely disagree with, though, is the return to the tiered approach, which didn’t work before and actually may have led to the need for the lockdown.

Isn't there evidence that the top two tiers were having an effect but the bottom one wasn't? Whether it's an enough effect of course is up for debate.

The problem with tiers imo is that it can be quite confusing whereas it should be as simple as possible.

I'd still argue that it's a bit premature to be making plans for a month from now, but after much dithering there's no question that the UK has gotten its act together. It's still a big peak that needs to be reduced rather drastically however, because while 10k/day looks far better than 30k, it will need to be a small fraction of that in order to make mass travel at Christmas viable without a major spike.

And that there’s not really any practical way of stopping people moving between places in different tiers. For example, if I want to go to my nearest supermarket to buy food, I have to cross a county boundary and go up a tier.

Be interesting to see how that works for football. For example if London is in a higher tier than down here then is someone allowed to travel from London to go to SMS.

I doubt it. I can see Saints only allowing local ST holders to attend at first.

How local is local though, within the City? Within an SO postcode? Hampshire?

Like I say it'll be interesting to see how they do it with tiers being different.

If it had been this weekend, and London was in a higher tier than Southampton, none of the Man Utd fans would have been able to attend <whistle>

I dont doubt you're right but it's all a bit of a contradicting joke with no end in sight. Cant wait to see who goes in what tier on Thursday.

Social pressure is a strange thing. Here, people were really diligent about social distancing, but mask-wearing was sporadic until the mask mandate was put in place...at which point it was pretty well universally adopted with little fuss. Most (though certainly not all) people don't want to be on the less-popular side; when mask-wearing was sporadic, that represented pressure to not stand out by wearing one, and when it became prevalent it represented pressure to start wearing one.

But sadly, as we're discovering, there are certain venues that simply cannot be made safe at this time.

They surely will only allow home fans in so there will be little travelling.

Tell me has the Christmas rule made me worse off. New rule I can form a bubble of three house holds say of 12 people. I can not mix with another house hold during that time. The old rule of 6 I could have 4 people round my house every day 23-28. That would have been 20 visitors over that period and see more people?

Fans don’t just live near their club though, which I think is Libby’s and Tom’s point.

It’s actually much simpler than it seems mate. Just think of a number, double it, subtract the age of your grandmother’s cat, multiply by the sq root of minus one...
