Did you watch their adaptation of 'War of the Worlds'? Decent special effects, but endless hackneyed woke dialogue, characters and plot that Wells would not have recognised. Just an excuse to kick the Empire and all 'British' values at the end of the Victorian era. A real shame. I thought they were going to produce a faithful re-telling of the book, which has never been done in over 100 years. And what they've done to Doctor Who is truly over the top. Viewing figures are up apparently But are foreign networks really buying this stuff? If their viewers won't watch it, the series is one bad season from being pulled again. A great pity, as I though it didn't do too badly for a few years after the 2005 relaunch. Having said all that, I still like and trust the BBC New service. Granted they aren't perfect. But I prefer them to ITV, Sky or any of the other news networks.
Didn't fancy War of the Worlds. Orson Welles nailed it. Gave up Dr Who a while ago, science fiction shouldn't be about science, it should be about people, like the old Dr Who, or my favourite, Star Trek. Programs I watch- The Repair Shop, Beechgrove, Gardeners World, MOTD on Sunday morning, Have I got News for you, odd features like the program about Bury, Jools Holland, University Challenge and stuff on BBC4 which isn't usually mainstream.
@Horrendous Hairpiece is not alone in his misgivings about the BBC... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-55076608 Apparently the Beeb feels it must do even more for its younger audience. Never mind folk who've paid the licence fee since the younger audience (to use a Gulf War expression) were in their dads' bags. Woke Factor 10 then - to infinity and beyond.
(I promise you that this is not a wind up) Ex Charlton defender Steve Thompson has been suspended by the BBC as a radio pundit, after using the word “handbags” to describe an on pitch altercation. The BBC is investigating him for using sexist language. Defend that.
A week after the Sunny and Shay programme allowed a lot of language to be used over a period of several minutes. In contrast to Darren Grimes, who was investigated by Police for something said by David Starkey, this hapless pair are still employed by the BBC and face no Police enquiry. One can only speculate as to the reason why S&S are not treated in the same way as others.
Handbags? Pathetic. I recall howls of protest from some quarters a few years back when a football manager (can't remember which one) used the term 'nitty gritty'. After much investigation, no link was found between that term and any racist connotation or origin. I suppose Lee Bowyer won't be able to use the term 'men' in future when talking about his players and their attitude or commitment during matches.
Bradley Walsh Quits Dr Who in New Years Day Special (true story in paper today) The New Years Day edition, titled “Trangendering of the Daleks”, sees Walsh given a Final Written Warning and Gender Counselling by the Doctor, after accidentally straying into one of the Tardis’ gender neutral toilets. In the climax to the episode, exciting new Dr Assistants Philip Schofield & Clinton Morrison pause from Taking the Knee to look on helplessly, as Jodie Whittaker regenerates into the new Doctor ....Alex Scott. Commenting on this staff change, the BBC said “Alex Scott is already in 48 of our programmes, so why not another?”.
I read about this. Was kind of hoping that with Grandad and his nephew out of the way, the Doctor and Yaz might be able to deepen their friendship... (if you know what I mean).
A program on BBC4 last night about Guillain-Barre syndrome was of particular interest to me since I had this illness 3 years ago but made a full recovery in 3 months. The neurologist told me I had "got away with it", and now I see what she meant, as it can mean total physical deterioration ending in locked-in syndrome. I knew it could be serious, but not that serious. As Modesty Blaise said It's better to be lucky than good.
I had heard of it but had no idea what it was until I looked it up just now. That must have been a traumatic experience, glad to see that it is a thing of the past.
The neurologist told me there are 2 variants, the one where you lose co-ordination, which I had, and the one where you lose strength, although you can have both. It was a bit weird, the worst thing was not being able to play the guitar for a month, but that's pretty small fry. Lots of other nasties out there apart from Covid.
BBC Swiss tax-dodging Stevenage slum surviving BLM Personality of the Year 2020: (surely some mistake? Ed.) Five also-rans and winner Lewis Hamilton on short-list... https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/sports-personality/55101008 All six (to be fair) have done great things in Sport this past year. But nobody's even heard of Hollie Doyle, and a fair number of people probably thought Rocket Ronnie was dead. Just save the licence payers a few quid and give it to LH right now.
