That's not true. You have to pay compensation to clubs when you sign a player under 21(I think) on a pre-contract bosman. It's because otherwise the club is not deemed to have been compensated for their money, time and effort put into developing the player.

No that's not true!A lot of players choose our academy over other clubs like Everton,Newcastle..etc like Jack Stephens did.

He's also making the assumption that academies do nothing but house players until they are adult. A good academy attracts the best players, but the training they get in football and in life skills separates Saints from some other academies. Our ex-players are not only good footballers they are also, with a few exceptions, good professionals.

To be fair though, keeping Modric this season could be the difference between Champions League football and Europa League football for you guys next season. Or to put it another way, the difference between a lot of money, and a small amount of money. And you could always go and get that 40 million for him next summer instead.

For us though, that 15 million for Chamberlain was just too much to reject (indeed, it was actually what Cortese demanded). We're a Championship club, newly promoted from League One. If we're still in the shake-up for promotion come January, part of that cash could be used to make promotion even more likely. So the sale of Chambo would not only have given us 15 million from Arsenal, it would have given us millions more through being a Premiership team.

Then of course there's also the fact that Chambo wasn't even our best player. It was hardly like we were selling an absolotely crucial, integeral part of team.

I'm surprised nobody has renamed this thread 'Saints & Sinners' and started by St.Goodness. <laugh> Despite all of that, an interesting discussion, maybe we all need to look at Ajax, Barcelona, and Man U. if we want to learn how to run academys. Southampton have done very well, more power to their halo.

The worst of all the examples we could have discussed is Arsenal and Fabregas, and United and Pique. It is sooooooooooooo wrong that they were able tto sign those players as young professioinals when they were at the Barca academy. I am not 100% but believe that at the time ofthem signing for those two teams, the rules were so that English teams could offer a pro contract earlier than in Spain (I may be wrong, I was once in 1986). That is why I peed myself when Arsenal have bleated about Barca tapping him upand Pique twice nullifying United's attack to win the Champs League with Barca. A little bit of Justice coming home to roost.

If we could have as much success as Man U or Barca from our academy players (if we stop selling them) then that would be fantastic. Think we need to be dynamite in the prem first though. Think we're getting there though via Cortese's vision and Adkins spellbinding management <wizard>

knew I could get that smiley in at some stage:biggrin:

I'm not 100% on the Spanish law but essentially it means that they can't sign a contract before they're 18 so other foreign teams can poach them. Although if Fabregas really loved Barca that much he wouldn't have taken the extra money on offer at Arsenal. Again what Arsenal and United did was take advantage of a weakness in the rules. Barcelona's pursuit of Fabregas however was highly unproffessional and in all likelihood illegal, I'm surprised Arsenal didn't report them, to be honest, they surely didn't have to look hard to find proof.

I don't think there's too much wrong with Tottenham Hotspur's Academy, as our U-19s recently thrashed Inter Milan 7-1 and are currently unbeaten and top of their group in the UEFA NextGen Series.

In fact, 10 of the 18 players involved in Spurs' UEFA Cup match away to PAOK in Greece were products of our Academy system - Jake Livermore, Andros Townsend, Ryan Fredericks, Tom Carroll, Harry Kane, Jake Nicholson, Jack Barthram, Kevin Stewart, Dean Parrett and Alex Pritchard.

Livermore is the only one that does.
When you consider our squad depth though, that's hardly surprising.

Our academy lads aren't getting too many chances now, especially with the stupid 5 subs rule. Adkins can no longer risk having youngsters on the bench to get experience.

As I said earlier though, you have to look at squad depth.

Cudicini; Corluka, Gallas, Dawson, Rose; Lennon, Sandro, Huddlestone, Dos Santos; Kranjcar; Pavlyuchenko.
    Gomes, Bassong, Pienaar.
That's a list of players that didn't start against Arsenal.
    401 international caps between them.
Hard for the kids to get past that lot.
